So here's my contest, simply tell me about a coin you like, and what is especially interesting about it. It can be something personal, something about the history of the coin, just about anything. The prize is a hard times token, and maybe some extra goodies, since the hard times token has a hole drilled in it. I think it's a hard times token anyway. Contest will end this Thursday night. If I forget to announce a winner, someone please pm me. This contest is open to everyone.

I really like the US coins with the eagle and the shield on the reverse like the Barber halves and quarters. I also like the seated halves, as they have the shield on both sides. There is just something about the detail in the shield I really like, and the symbolism of the defending of our freedom and liberty. I don't have many in my collecion yet, but after I get my Morgans as far as I can afford they I will start working on the Barbers.

I like Capped Bust Halves. The reverse shows an American (Bald) Eagle with the strongest claws I've ever seen on any coinage. The Eagle is facing right with a strong hooked beak. In each of these powerful claws are the Olive Branch and three Arrows. Very impressive and beautiful for coins of a young nation...

My favorite coin is my 1857 Flying Eagle. It has an amazing design, and I've just recently found out about 1854 and 1855 Flying Eagle "Medium Cent" Pattern Cents. I've gotta get my hands on one of those!

    I like Ike

My favorite coin is the Eisenhower dollar. They are as big as the old silver dollars and I can get them in proof. I can't afford proof Morgan or Peace dollars. ;) Plus there are a lot of fun varieties to look for in the Ike dollar series.

    The Winged Liberty

The Winged Liberty or more commonly known as the Mercury Dime is my favorite coin to collect. They are not that hard to find at MS grade, and the prices are not to outragous except for key date rarities. What I have learned about the coin and what it was meant to represent really gives me an added love for its exsistence in my collection. I used to spend them back when 10 cents could buy a good deal of candy for a boy.

    Ah....Franklins!....they are the best!
Franklins are cheap and are found in almost any grade!

I think that was one of the first sets I ever completed and man was that fun!
I have now started on Proof Franklins all are in PF 66...I'm over half way done and have some CAMEO coins too!
As for the one that I like the best....a 1962 PF66 CAMEO by NGC...its not rare but it is a pretty coin....after that it would be a 1954 NGC PF66--the reason for the 1962 being a coin that means alot to me...it was a good price and it has a nice heavy cameo...most have little cameo but this one sure is a CAMEO!

I think my most favorite coin is the SBA. It was minted for 3 years, noone used it, it flopped, they stopped minting it. For twenty years it sat in the vaults collecting dust.

The government decided that since it owned all the stamp machines, it would MAKE people use the SBAs, by giving them in change. They started getting low on dollar coins so they decided to make a new dollar coin, the Sacagawea. They were going to run out of SBAs before the Sac would get produced, so after a 20 year hiatus, they did another run of SBAs. I think its really funny that a coin was only minted in four years, but they were two decades apart.

Are there other coins that had a gap in mintage of that long?

The coin is an ugly, confusing thing, but I love the story.

I think my most favorite coin is the Morgan, I know their not that rare, but to me their detail is so perfect. The Morgan is thick, and strong like our country. It's a beauty to the eye, I love silver coins, and when you hold this one in you hand, you and feel the beauty, the strength it stands for. Everytime I get them out thats what I do, set and think about their beauty, and the power you feel when you hold one in your hand. For sure the Morgan is definitely my favorite coin.

Picking one in paticular for me is very difficult. My interests span accross virtually every US denomination. Not the best for my wallet, but I sure do enjoy it. Currently I've revisited my Eisenhower Dollar collection (trying to get complete all business strikes in MS65 or higher). My favorite Ike I have so far is the 1978-D...Not because of is value, but because of how I obtained it. I found this in an coin shop in Boston where the store-keep had it graded as MS64. It looked better to me, so I took a chance. BAsed on feedback form several other coin dealers and my own its MS66
