Today's mail brought my birthday present from one of our fellow CTers. I helped with the PayPal part but I really appreciating him pointing out the coin which is something that fits in my accumulation. Thanks! As Falling Horsemen go, this one is different. We always separate the coins into four types (Kneeling, Sitting, Reaching and Grasping) based on the pose of the barbarian. This one was listed in RIC as a sitting type but the figure is actually on one knee which I would call kneeling except for the fact we used that word for the almost prone on the ground pose which might need to be called 'prostrate' to free up 'kneeling' for this style. This Rome mint coin is also a bit unusual in the portrait with a small globe just right of the bust. Perhaps more unusual is the large amount of well toned silver remaining. The head of the Roman soldier is flat struck but there is no wear. At 'R' his is not my most rare horseman but it is probably my nicest all around example. From Friday's show is a RIC rated C4 (so common almost everyone they checked had one) Magnentius from the Lugdunum mint. The reverse shows a soldier with victory and labarum. The obverse portrait is unusual for Magnentius in that he wears a diadem rather than having his head bare as on most coins. The obverse is slightly double struck showing rotation and a flat spot on the forehead. Lately I have been getting several new coins of the first part of the reign of Magnentius. I'm not sure whether this is fully intentional or a sign of what is on the market that catches my eye.
Glad you got the FH Doug. Its a good addition to your collection. Theres a lot I like about the coin, a small thing I like is the "D" on the obv. Neat Magnentius too.
Cool additions Doug!! I always find it interesting when someone points out the subtle variations that so many of the rest of us miss.
