I bought this last week in person at the Harlan Berk coin store in downtown Chicago. Even somewhat decent portraits of this type seem harder to find. This isn't the best, but it was decent enough for me. That store is definitely worth a visit if you're in Chicago. Constantine IV Pogonatus (668 - 685), with Heraclius and Tiberius, Æ Follis (20mm, 4.38 g). Syracuse mint; Obv: No legend, Crowned and cuirassed facing bust, holding globus cruciger; Rev: Large M, flanked by Heraclius and Tiberius standing facing; TKW monogram above, [SC]L in exergue; MIB 104; SB 1207
Very nice! These Constantine IV's are interesting as the last Byzantine bronzes (and Solidi) to really attempt individualized, artistic portraiture (w variable success!). Berk, of course, is known for Byzantine bronzes in particular. Berk wrote a volume on the Byzantine Follis (Eastern Roman Successors of the Sestertius) and produced at least two important sales of Byzantine bronze coins (which included some Constantius IV Folles like this one): the Berk-England (7 Dec 1989) Sale of Byzantine Bronze Coins [free on Google Books & elsewhere], which now serves as a useful reference, and HJB Fixed Price List No. 4, “All Byzantine Bronze” in 1976. The 1976 catalog was a good start, but Berk-England is a real classic. I actually always remember it for the section on Constantine IV Pogonatus Folles (pp. 37-40 covering many different mints), including a great run of Syracuse mint Pogo. Folles (lots 209-215, then the Syracuse halves!). Well worth checking out.
