Here's my latest unofficial VLPP. The bust is facing the wrong way and they forgot to engrave the shield/wreath over the altar. The "horse" on the shield is pretty funny. Constantine I Circa A.D. 318 18mm 2.9g legend consisting of IIIII’s – bust right with helmet, cuir., spear across l. shoulder, shield inscribed with horseman on right arm [VICTORIAE LAETAE PRINC PERP] -- two Victories stg., facing one another [together holding shield inscribed VOT PR] altar between them. cf. RIC VII Siscia 56 here is the prototype
Great horse on the shield! That was the first thing I noticed. Also... is it just me... or does the left "Victory" look like it might be holding a pig or some other small four-legged creature under its arm? (Like a Roman Republican oath-swearing scene, or maybe just dinner time?) I also thought the right one looks like eight-armed Hindu Goddess Durga hugging herself -- so probably just weird lines going all over combined with my weird imagination! Beautifully preserved & fascinating specimen
That’s a fantastic unofficial specimen! I can just imagine the amateur engraver finishing up his work and thinking… “that’s the ticket! No one will ever be able to tell…”
