    Hi all!

I've been trying to consign some coins that I don't want to an auction house, and have settled with Naumann. As I'm in the UK, I tried contacting UK auction houses first (namely Roma), although they stopped responding to my emails :(

I then tried Leu, as I thought they'd fetch a decent price there, although they didn't respond to me at all.

I then contacted Naumann, and they agreed to take the coins I was selling (happy days!). However, they are in Austria, and because of the curse that is Brexit, I am a bit concerned there will be issues sending my coins to an EU country. The Royal Mail website says that I cannot send any coins of precious metals - or coins plated in precious metals - to Austria. One of my coins (a Mark Anthony Quinarius) is silver, and I am also sending a couple of plated antoninianii. However, when speaking to someone from the Post Office, they said that sending coins is completely fine.

I know this is a bit specific, but does anyone have any experiences importing coins from the UK to Austria (or another EU country) to be sold at auction? This is my first time consigning to a "proper" auction (i.e. first non-eBay sale lol), so I'm just a bit new to this experience.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this?

    Thanks!

In most cases, there is a legal distinction between "coins" (legal tender) and collectible or antique numismatic items.

Just use a trustful carrier (UPS e.g.) and ship metal stampings.
    It is worthwhile

It's easy, the receiver will have a additional tax fee from local taxes. Sometimes the fee is exceeding the value of the coin. This is because the local criminal institutes named taxes apply a handling fee. At least annoying, if I sell a coin on a auction in the UK, decide to sell later in to US where a unaware buyer of the EU purchase it you can imagine what happens. Best would be not to send them by FedEx and add a 30 Euro value plus the keyword 'sample' on the regular mail package.
Otherwise send them through FedEx (insured for the right value) and import them in Belgium. In this country they apply only a 6% additional tax. Once in the EU they can be send to any other location without additional taxes. Still a lot better compared to the 9% plus handling which they apply in the Netherlands for example.

Sorry - but this applies only for professionals.
A private collector doesn't worry about taxes.
He ships securely - and collects the money when sold

A private collector will start to worry once he 'wins' a coin for 60 Euro and has to pay a 150 Euro bill after all. Once a private seller is happy to have sold a coin and gets it back by mail, seeing the paypal transaction reversed and leaving you only with the expenses of the shipment will it neither lead to happiness.

For the Professional who imports 20.000 worth of coins it's not such a big deal, paying a fixed percentage of import taxes and a relative small handling fee does not hurt the same as it will hurt the private buyer.

    Sorry again
There is no talking about paypal, ebay or anything else in this thread.
Just about how to send a coin as a private individual from the UK to a very respectful company in Austria.
And for this task I recommend a decent carrier.

Einverstanden, die Österreichische Post ist wirklich gut!

That is for the coins which will be returned if not sold. Some basic knowledge of the language might come at hand, sending form the UK will be able through Royal mail. They do a pretty decent job!

As you probably know when you ship from UK to EU now you have to declare the value of the content and the value it is placed with a tag on the envelope and will be taxed by custom. Some coins that I have seen seen shipped from UK are described as “token”, probably to avoid any problem with stealing too.
Naumann request an export permission to ship coins after the sale.

I know nothing about this, but I'm surprised that there isn't any distinction between a coin imported for resale (via an auction) and bought from a dealer. Since Naumann has said that they will sell your coins, have you spoken to them and asked their advice?
