I want to give a fair price on this, and I'd also like grade estimates if possible I'm guessing it's ~ G04 to G06. But I have very limited experience in trying to estimate coin grades Just looking for general advice and what I should pay for a coin like this. Thanks everyone!
Yeah I know they ain't cheap!!! I picked up one of those gold Mercs a couple weeks ago, and I've always had a soft spot for regular Mercs. I figure it's time to finally try and get the holy grail... So you think that's G06? Will it grade? It looks like it has a tiny scratch on the face, how much would that affect grading?
Get a nice Charlotte/Dahlonega mint gold coin or a key date seated coin. 1916-D Merc is overrated. But you need one for your collection, so I'm going to say that you should avoid buying this specific coin raw as there are now 2 fakes for every real one. As far as I know, this one seems legit. The shape of the mintmark is correct. I'd say G-4 due to the rims.
Well I ain't good at grading but I might think that is an AG3 - 450$ probably a good hole "filler" coin if you are completing a Dansco!! Other people will have other opinions. IF I was filling my Dansco album with the only remaining coin, I'd buy it for 450$ if you have the money and can't afford a better condition coin that would run around a 1000$
Yeah I know there are tons of fakes. I'd send it in to get graded immediately if I did pick it up. Thank you for your help. First the Merc book, then other pieces that catch my eye!
I'd say it's a G-05, as in literally halfway between G-04 and G-06. Which way it grades at a TPG company is probably a tossup. The MM looks good to me: it's in the right position and it's the right shape. I think it's real, but I wouldn't touch it until it gets certified, or, if the seller is someone I trusted and had a relationship with, I'd make it clear it's going to PCGS/NGC/ANACS as soon as I can get it in the mail. As for price, raw, I'd probably want to be in the $5-600 range, with a return privilege if it comes back fake, of course.
There's a reason or 2 why it's not graded. Mainly that scratch on the obverse. I wouldn't buy it. If you can afford that, save up a little more for a better one. I'd search ebay for certified ones with best offers.
No one has had it graded due to the obverse scratch and the rims. This coin should sell for about $450.00 but hold out for something better around $500-$600 and cleaner. It's barely a hole filler and my hole filler is a lot better than this one.
I saw a 16-D in PCGS AU55 at the Central States show. I didn't even ask price, but I would guess somewhere in the neighborhood of $10,000.
This 100%. Go fill the hole with a counterfeit or a 2016 gold Merc and then buy a nice seated half or draped bust coin or two. I'd rather hold a larger, higher grade coin with more history than this worn slug of a coin.
