I’ve got a bunch of rusted coins here that I am going to soak in 100% extra virgin olive oil to see what happens to them. Feel free to comment or share your own experiences with rusted coin conservation.

Glad you are having fun with these. I want to do some more experimenting with sodium sulfite for a reducing agent. Consider getting a brass brush and doing some light brushing.

Thanks, it’s fun to test on coins I won’t cry over if they get ruined. And, I’m moving here in a few months and everything must go! I need to decide what stays and not. I’m not going to transport rusted coins across the globe, but if they can be preserved a little with oil, I’ll keep them.

NaSo3 right? Been over a decade since I took chemistry... is that corrosive?

Na2SO3, depends on what you call corrosive. If I get it on my hands, I rinse it off. The idea is that it goes to Na2SO4 (oxidized, so something else has to get reduced...hopefully the oxygen from the metal oxide.)

In they go! We’ll see how long it takes my wife to find out I’ve been pinching her olive oil...
