Hi, a long time ago I bought this coin. It is one of my favourites, however small or common it might be. Take a good look at it: Have you ever seen anything like it? I know, it MUST be a double strike, no way it can be a conjugated bust. I´m just messing around with the title of this thread....it´s just its beauty what gets me. Look how perfectly the tiara goes, no superimposed dots or cracks, "second face" just sharp enough, makes you think it has more hair. I am sorry, I just love it. Please tell me your opinions about it. It´s my first thread, hope you like it as me! KIWITI.-
I like it too sir. What is great about it is its sublety. You don't get slammed in the face with the double strike like so many byzantine issues. This one you can look at for a few seconds before the second face becomes apparent. However, once your eye knows its there, it immediately sees it the next time it looks at it. Very cool!
Welcome. I have never seen anything like it (not that I have seen everything), I would love something like that in my collection.
Great double strike. Honorius, right? Is it Alexandria or Antioch mint? I can't tell from the image. I'm inclined to say Antioch, RIC X 153
oh that is cool, i had to look again to see the double strike...didn't catch it at first. on of these LRB with honorius, arcadius, and theodosius on the reverse is on my to get list anyway.
I have one coin which also has unintentional jugate busts, not a double-strike but an overstrike. This is a Seleucid issue of Antiochus IV overstruck by the Nabataeans with head of Athena. A lovely mess...
The reverse shows the three emperors at the time of which one, Theodosius II, was quite young and shown shorter in the middle. I don't have him or a coin not from Antioch (both exist but these are more common). Arcadius Honorius My 'jugate' doublestrike is not as subtle and Constantius II. They are not terribly common but not popular with most collectors.
"Jugate"! Sorry...my bad. In spanish the word is: "conjugados" so there´s the confusion. Nice doublestrike by the way, like a ghost image.
I can't look at this coin for long, it makes me feel weird..... Valentinian I Coin: Bronze AE3 D N VALENTINI-ANVS P F AVG - Diademed draped & cuirassed bust right SECVRITAS REIPVBLICAE - Victory advancing left, holding wreath & palm, no fieldmarks. Exergue: Mint: Siscia (AD 364-367) Wt./Size/Axis: 2.35g / 18mm / - References: RIC 7a, ii(a), Cohen 37
Beautiful double. At first glance you don't see it, then it appears to be 2 faces. Only after looking at the tiara does it become noticeable as a double strike.
"Conjugated" Tehehe. amo amas amant amamus amatis amant But seriously, the word you are looking for is either conjoined or jugate, either would be applicable.
Not exactly conjoined but not not either is my super rarity being the only coin of Constantius Gallus with a diademed portrait. Actually it is an double/overstrike with Constantius II (obverse left) and Gallus (obverse right) meeting in such a way that the Augustus head merged with the Caesar face. The coin is a rough dog ruined by improper cleaning and would have been worth ten times as much to me (I paid $5) had it come with original dirt and no electrolysis. Bothe reverses were the same or one erased the other as if the blank stuck in the die between the two obverses. I love weird coins but it is hard to love something this ugly.
