HR90210, U.S. Congress has just been approved. The bill calls for the production of six quarter dollar coins to be produced in 2017 featuring the following designs emblematic of the teenage dramas that have contributed the most to our culture:

    January-February - Beverly Hills, 90210

    March-April - Melrose Place

    May-June - The O.C.

    July-August - The Hills

    September-October - Gossip Girl

    November-December - One Tree Hill

State Representative Conrad (I-CA) drafted the bill, stating that such coins would "give an incentive to our young people to collect coins and give them a new appreciation for what sits in their pocket beside their iPhone." The bill also requires that a 10-oz silver proof commemorative dollar be issued alongside each new coin design, bearing on one side a design emblematic of each television show, and on the other side a portrait of George Washington along with a small 'CW' logo beside the mintmark. Designs will be chosen from those sent in by interested participants as part of the U.S. Mint's Teenage Dramatic Infusion program.

A 10-oz silver dollar? There should be plenty of room to sell advertising space on that thing!

Yes, advertising space will be sold on the 10 oz. silver dollars. Proceeds from the sales of the silver dollars will go to the kids of 90210 to help cure their conditions. They are the world's oldest teenagers.

Isn't there also talk of a series commemorating reality TV shows immediately following this priceless collection?

A series commemorating reality shows? Now that is just ridiculous. After all, something like that might get in the way of America's upcoming Best Celebrity Court Cases of All Time commemorative dollar coin program.

Speaking of April Fools Day, isn't that when the mint will change the composition of the cent to 12.5% zinc and 87.5% air to reduce production costs?

I can understand that. It's not that hard to believe when you remember the 57-piece proof set issued this year.

Don’t feel bad, I literally sat up in my chair and said: “No, anything but that! What is wrong with this country?” Then I sighed with relief and fell back in my chair when I realized it was a joke…a good one at that.

That was almost my exact same reaction and its sad that this could even be considered as possible.

I know. It’s a scary world we live in, and it is particularly scary times right now.

I have another congressional quote on the proposed Teenage Drama program:

    H. Simpson (D-OH): "I think it's a great way to generate extra revenue in these tough economic times. The television stations can pay us a small fee for each quarter minted. It's a win-win for everyone."

They already have their own ideas. How about the Energizer Bunny commemorative silver dollar? The issue price was 64.95, and it keeps going and going... down in value.
