The OTHER STUFF I bought at an auction recently, (besides the Ardashir drachm I posted earlier), are all large lots. Sorry, I simply cannot keep my fingers away from the keyboard. "Deals" attract me, especially if I do not own many of the series yet. My first one was this: Maybe my Parthian collector friends can help me out. The two that attracted me to this lot, (forget the Alex), is top row middle, (I know the test cuts are unfortunate but of the period) and second row far right. I am guessing Sellwood 9 on the top row. Sinatruces? second row right?
Next ones are all Parthian copper. I keep buying these since for a decade I NEVER saw a parthian copper, so buy up whatever I lay my greasy paws on in case the source dries up. I noticed the early coin lower right. Anything else good? Ignore the icky Seleucid piece.
Nice! I was bidding on the first lot of drachms but dropped out at $300 because I was mostly interested in just the top drachm. I am no expert on Parthian coins, but I believe it is Arsakes I or II, and any satrapal cap Parthian is a rare sight in a bulk lot, as even the "Priapatius to Mithradates I" type (with MEGALOU) goes for $150+ by itself.
Nice pick-ups @medoraman , I did take a good look at these group lots but my only multi-coin lot of the sale was a tiny group of 4 Elymais bronzes that had a helpfully low starting bid, and included one type I didn't own yet. In the silver drachms: top row middle (wearing bashlyk) is indeed Sellwood 9.1, assigned by Sellwood to Mithradates I and reassigned by Assar to Phriapatios (c.185-170 BC). Middle row, right is Sellwood 33.3, assigned by Sellwood to Gotarzes I and by Sellwood to Sinatrukes. In the first bronze lot, bottom right coin is Sellwood 7.2, assigned by Assar to Arsakes II (who is also the first Artabanos, thus throwing off the numbering of all subsequent Artabanii). In the second bronze lot, it looks like you have another bashlyk type. Other than that, nothing really jumps out at me, except that you should know that the bronzes on crudely cast flans are usually from the mint of Seleukia on the Tigris.
On group 3, the bashlik issue you can see is Sellwood 8.3. However, the coin in the bottom right in that group is also a bashlik issue. I cannot place it. Bashlik left, (actually nicer than the one you can see), and cross between seated and standing figure on reverse. It almost appears to be an obol of phriapates, as it is thin and concave strike. Did they make bashlik obols? Contemporary counterfeit?
