the 1861 new orleans mint? there is a die crack from the nose on up to the rim at around 1200 that is the only way to seperate them but the majority of the ones struck by the csa did not have the crack it just happens that the few they struck with their reverse had the same die crack as some of those struck with the normal reverse. the us mint only made 330000 of them and i believe louisiana minted over 1200000 after they left the united states and then when they became a confederate state they minted about 990000 more. itsan interesting year for the new orleans mint
There were six different die varieties of 1861-O half dollar struck by the CSA. The most famous one was the just mentioned that has a die crack from the rim to the bridge of the nose. That die was also used for striking the four genuine CSA half dollars. Two other things you can look for are a vertical crack from the rim up to Liberty's base between the 8 and the 6, or a die gouge through the upper berry just to the left of the eagle. All the coins struck from these dies were struck by the CSA as well.
i was wondering myself this same question the other day, there was one ngc graded confederate on the bay
If by CSA half...you mean the 1861-O WB-102 half. The answer is yes, if you were to cherry pick this variety off of eBay or anywhere else, you could sell it for a premium as this variety caries a premium. However, it is a very well known variety so you gotta be careful because I'm sure tons of people look for them.
Die breaks, cracks, and a copy of riley's standards. I had a copy, but do not anymore. A member on here does have them, but I am unsure if he wants to disclose them anymore.
I don't know if that is WB-104, but it is the speared berry so it is a half dollar struck by the Confederacy. (The old WB numbers are a bit of a problem in that they do not always relate to a specific variety. The old Wiley-Bugart book only mentions four varieties of 1861-O half dollar when there are actually 14 plus the CSA half. There is also the problem that the obverse die with the crack to the bridge of the nose that was used for the CSA half and some regular halves, was also used in an earlier uncracked state with the same Union reverse die. So coins from that die pair are referenced by two different WB numbers.)
