I don't know a great deal about currency. I do collect some Civil war memorabilia and have purchased a couple confederate notes from a dealer I trust. Is it a complete crapshoot purchasing conf. currency on e-bay? I don't own a reference book yet, and won't be purchasing any more until I do, but I'm curious what the experts in here have to say.

I don't collect much currency but I do know that there is quite a bit of counterfeit currency out there. A good deal of the contemporary counterfeits were produced by the North to undermine the Souther economy and are highly collectible. (I own a few examples of contemporary Confederate currency.) A very good reference book on the subject is the newly released Whitman Official Red Book A Guide Book of Counterfeit Confederate Currency by George Tremmel.

There are also TONS of modern reproductions to be aware of. Some are very deceptive if you don't know what to look for.

Just today I bought a book at the ANA book sale entitled Confederate And Souther State Currency by William Bradbeer. The book is copyrighted 1915 and was reprinted in 1956. It appears to be a good reference but I have only flipped through it so far.

    Hope this helps.
