Does anybody know of any high quality replicas of civil war coinage? I am interested in purchasing some replica pieces to study and would like ones that are made of true metal composition and preferably struck. They can be of either actual known issues or fantasy pieces.

Anyone got anything or any ideas where to look?

There's the bashlow restrikes of the confederate cent made from the damaged original dies and there's the confederate halfs made from original 1861-o halfs I can't remember right now who did them made I think 500 not sure if Daniel Carr has done any either. Then there's many civil war tokens too

One could do worse than to assemble a collection of several hundred choice Civil War tokens, especially store cards, then gradually find photos of the original storefronts from LOC archives, libraries, or state historical societies.

I remember seeing a replica set of them for $900 somewhere. To find an original confederate coin would be like finding the holy grail. When it comes to confederate stuff I look for militaria and paper money.

I have a mild, passing interest in CWTs, but haven't seen anything yet to make me want to purchase anything.

On that note, did they ever make any CWTs out of silver? Those I would be interested in.

I've heard of the bashlow restrikes but haven't searched for any. I was mainly looking for a good half dollar of the known variety and possibly a fantasy quarter.

That might be a fun set for Moonlight Mint - a fantasy set of civil war coins. Yes please.

Yes, there's plenty of genuine paper money around, and Criswell's book will alert you to varieties you never guessed existed. On top of that, there's all the state and city notes and scrip of the Confederate era. In addition, there's contemporary counterfeits worth more than genuine notes. I would say there's a LOT of fake militaria around, however.

There's a beautiful hardbound "Time-Life" book titled "Echoes of Glory -- Arms and Equipment of the Confederacy," published in 1991. Time-Life overestimated demand, and there's a vast number of remaindered volumes out there, I paid $7
for my copy; 310 pages, FULL of photographs of hats, flags, blankets, knapsacks, shirts, shoes and boots, band instruments, canteens, cooking utensils, etc., etc.

There are definitely a lot of confederate fake militaria out there. I'm quite a fan of confederate and southern currency at the time. Very beautiful notes. Sadly I have not found any confederate coins yet.

That piece only shows the reverse of the Confederate coin. The actual obverse was the Seated Liberty Obverse.

They come indifferent composition also. 2 on right are "restrikes", one on left is fake.

If memory service, they came in 3 compositions: Bronze, Silver and Goldine (I'm not entirely sure what that is).

The common ones are copper/bronze, ( middle) and goldine ( right). There is also silver, gold, aluminum and some red fiber ones that I have seen. HA sold the aluminum and goid one ( both NGC). Evidently the Smithsonian , that I believe has the restrike dies, issued a set of their own, including ,999 silver, gold, platinum and copper in 2011 ( 150th anniv for 12000.

They made a lot of restrikes . You can tell the difference between the original ones because after the war was over the dies were defaced. Thus the bashlow cents have gashes in them while the original ones are clean. Don't feel bad that you don't know what goldine is no one really does (at least in this article)
Bashlow also made confederate half's, and some other coins.
    See Article below.

How rare is it to come across an original confederate coin. I'm interested in collecting things from the confederacy but I've never seen an original. just the bashlows.
Do you own an original confederate coin? what would the value be?

I think goldine is brass. When I performed a google search and clicked on a dictionary link it gave me the definition of brass.

No I don't own a original. I'm not that well off. I'm happy bragging about a $100 or so purchase under heritage auction records. I would not even buy a haseltine restrikes as there are other coins I would rather buy at these prices assuming I was even in a position to buy them right now, which I am not.

I expected them to be quite valueable but not several 100 thousand. What are the haseltine restrikes? are those the first restrikes done for the 100 year anniversary in the 60s? how many restrikes of these coins are there?

Reread the article. It answers every question about the haseltine and bashlow restrikes.
