I can see that CONECA goes well beyond Cherrypickers'. What I can't get is answers to some questions. Their FAQs link comes up with nothing. I think I have a variety not listed in Cherrypickers' but several show up in CONECA. As a non-member I can't see any images (no surprise.) What I need to know is, "Do they have images of their listed varieties?" I'll join if their site will help me with identification. But I can't even find the place to ask questions.
im not sure about their site, but Mike Diamond is a member here. Also, you could post pics of your coin.. and members here could take a look
I don't think I can get a good enough image. I'm looking at OMM's and my camera is only a 3 Mpixel. Even with macro, I don't think that's enough. When I learn how to use my wife's camera, then I should be able to take good images. Hers is a 12 Mpixel digital SLR. But that's in the future. Right now I need to compare to existing images. And even with my 9x loupe I still won't be sure. That's another reason why I may join CONECA; so that they can do identifications/authentications.
No they don't have photos on their website---the only way to get a photo of a variety from their data is to buy one of the books written by James Wiles. Most of them are out of print and $$$. Their website needs ALOT of help. Just the other day the web master sent out a letter because some members say that it takes a long time for the page to load. I did a test and it too over 10min. to load. Speedy
You don't have to be a member---just email James Wiles and ask him how much he charges. While I don't agree with all of his stands on issues I've never had a problem with sending him coins to check out for me. Speedy
I suspected I could do that. But if I can weed out some of the coins in question it will save me a few bucks.
Okay, no images. Bummer. Right now I have one BIG problem. I'm looking at silver Roosevelt dimes, all MS-64 or higher (all the business strikes are MS-66.) The "S" mintmarks are REALLY tough. They're either partially filled, poorly entered on the die, worn or OMM's. I just can't tell. And I ran into an unexpected variety. It's what appears to be mechanical doubling on a proof coin. Even with multiple strikes, I wouldn't have expected this sort of problem on a proof coin.
Nope---no pictures. The only ones that they do have online are the ones you can see. I don't think Wiles has a book out about Dimes either....you might try his website www.varietyvista.com and see if he has anything there--- Speedy
The Cherrypicker's Guide, Fourth Edition, Volume II, has many Roosevelt dime errors with pictures, as well as many other denominations. It would be helpful to give a description in full detail, include the year, mint, and tell us if the anomaly is on the obverse (front) or reverse (back) of the coin. With a good enough description we might be able to find a picture of the coin and hopefully match your coin. Besides the aforementioned book I also have The RPM Book. This book was published in 1983 and it is exceptionally difficult to find a copy let alone be allowed to buy it. This book covers cents, nickels, dimes and quarters for various repunched mint marks. I will be happy to check my book when you can get us a picture or a super good description. jeankay
