I've never had this coin graded but I believe it to be in MS condition. It's a 1921 Morgan with a D mint mark. Any insight would be great.
Base on spotting and hairlines on reverse it may have been dipped in the past, if so it would get graded "details" by a TPG. That said who doesn't love to hold a raw Morgan in their hand?
No I actually found this coin while metal detecting in my backyard. Was 8" in the ground. Only thing I used was water and Ive been amazed by the condition ever since. Was just interested to see what kind of value people would give it
I understand what you're trying to say, but it reads as if you're suggesting hairlines are the result of dipping and/or that dipping itself automatically results in a details grade. Being as the OP is new, you may want to clarify.
Great find - Based on the condition as I can see I feel the value wouldn't be much over melt. You can go to a site like coinflation to get an idea of melt values and look at ebay to look at closing values for a circulated 1921 Morgan. I would not expect much over $17 if I was selling to another individual. A coin shop probably wouldn't give you much over $12 or $13. Not to say that you couldn't get lucky on eBay and sell it for more. But then you have to factor in fees and the unknown buyer craziness. Hope that helps
Yeah I deff see what your saying. It's a quiet common morgan, especially it being a 1921. I don't figure it to be worth more than 40-50. I can't be disappointed with a find like this though.
Yeah, what it comes down to is what someone would be willing to pay. I'll prob just hold onto it. I have 2 uncirc "cc" Morgan's anyway so this is just a cool ad-in
I feel the coin has been cleaned or dipped improperly in the past that has led to the hairlines on the reverse that I can see. Pictures are not the best and my opinion is only that.
Yes, it is nice to have raw Morgan's in any quantity or condition. BTW - not suggesting you cleaned it or dipped it improperly just that it shows signs of it being done sometime in the past 90+ years.
Here is a stack of 20 Morgan's sitting on my desk. Being able to handle these without worry is sometimes more satisfying than looking at one nice coin through a plastic capsule. Value to me - doesn't mean as much as the history and joy I get in handling them. It's good to have a little of both (uncirculated and circulated) in a collection IMO. Enjoy!!!
Yeah, I mean I can't fully say in terms of dipping. When I cleaned it, I just used alittle water and a soft bristled brush so maybe that's why. I'm happy either way. And your deff right. I have a bunch of older silver and love being able to just handle them without worrying about tarnishing them
Perhaps I misunderstood your earlier post, sir. For the sake of clarity, dipping, even improperly/excessively, is not a direct cause of hairlines.
