Hey guys, This is only my third post to the message board and so far I love the site. The information you guys provide is informative and interesting. I inherited a almost complete IHC set from a relative and have caught the coin bug as you guys say. I came from the Baseball card collecting world and I always thought coin collecting was different, but now I cannot say that; it is amazing. Now, to my question. As I was going through the set that was passed on to me, I realized that the set had an 1874 IHC in the 1871 place, I think part of the 4 wore out and it was hard to see that the 4 was not a 1. The vision must have been going out on him, 91 years will do that to vision. Anyway, I want to complete the set and my local dealer is wierd, he never wants to talk, just stand there as I look, so I figure I will complete the set via ebay. From what I have read, you guys do not reccomend buying raw coins from ebay, so I have been looking for a PCGS or another TPG coin. I found a PCGS MS63 RB 1871 IHC that I really would like to have as a feature of the coin collection. To my knowledge the rest of the IHC that he had are at best XF. So, would this coin be okay to buy from ebay? http://cgi.ebay.com/1871-PCGS-MS63-...tZCoins_US_Individual?_trksid=p3286.m20.l1116 I just do not want to make a 700 dollar mistake. PCGS price guide puts the value in this neighborhood in fact it says that MS63 RB is worth $900 so it doesn't seem like the value is to high. Any advice would be great. Cheers, Chris Kampmann
Also sets usually look better when they are all about the same grade , so I would get a EF or AU , Then again it's your set and you buy what you like , it never hurts to buy the coin in the best grade you can afford , also this coin is a nice RB and probably wouldn't stick out as much as bright red coin . Are you going to keep the coins in an album , or seperately as in the slabbed '71 . Also in a coin of this value it's a good idea to shop around as the Noost said cause all MS-63-RBs are not equal . rzage
Assuming The coin is accurately graded, I can't tell from those pictures, We can find you a better deal.
Thanks guys so far, I went on that Heritage Auctions site and that seems to be a good way to go, minus the buyers fee on the coins, but they seem to have a broad selection. I want to keep the coin slabbed, but I think I would like to start upgrading the set coin by coin. With that in mind would it be a bad idea to buy a raw coin from ebay?
The way Ebay is headed I would only buy the cheapest coins there and that's only if the seller has a long history , with good feedback and a generous return policy , there are still a few honest sellers there , but do your homework on them , there's a lot of high quality counterfeits coming out of China and the Mideast . rzage:hatch::hammer:
Welcome to the site !! And congrats on a nice set as well. I think the coin shown is too brown to go a RB, AND, the price is a tad high for the COIN not the holder..... For some expert advise and a great bit of knowledge, visit www.indiancent.com and www.thepennylady.com, two very sharp and knowledgable dealers, both board members here, and good folks you can trust. Always remember on Ebay, there are commisions and fees involved, you can almost ALWAYS do better elsewhere.
Jack does either of the top tpgs guarantee the coins that turn Brown in their slabs if it is listed as RB . Rusty
Well - I am not sure the price is that bad. The only problem I have is that you can not see the coin in the picture - without a good picture I would skip it. As mentioned not all MS63's are the same.
