I was looking through my old coins, and found this.
The coin is completely smooth, everywhere (even edges)

    It' a V nickel. 1883-1912. Worth maybe $.25.

What would happen if I tried to spend this at a shop?

Sorry to give you the bad news but your coin is a slug. IMO it is not worth more than a nickel.

    P-01 V nickel. That's a keeper.
NLL look at the second photo.

Yes I saw it was a v nickel. Is there a market for these things? I called it a slug because it has no date. That was bad on my part.

Disagree, to grade P01 it must be identifiable as to type, date and mintmark.

    Still not worthless, just ungradeable.

That's one slick V-nick, for sure. But they got that way. Did a lot of time in commerce. The reverses always wore away first. I agree that it's only worth about a quarter at most in that condition, and realistically only face value, but hey, it is a 105+ year old nickel. Would make a fun pocket piece.
