so i was at the coin shop today chit chatting with a few of the regulars, when one of them asked how my merc collection was coming along. slow as always, but one day i will be done and can move on to something else i told him. he gave me this look of confusion, and said move on???? yeah, when you are finished, you just move on to start a new collection of something. he said by the time i am done i will have such a love for what i had accomplished, i will continue to collect them, or it will feel as though there is a void in my life. he currently has 63 complete ms65 or better state quarters sets, as well as 3 full sets of lincolns to date. it got me thinking, is this a common thing to any of you??? do you start something and just never stop? i guess i never really thought about it, and i guess you could spend a life time of collecting lincolns, or whatever it is you collect, and constantly upgrading to better and better condition. do any of you do this?

Each to his own. Do whatever pleases you.

Completing a set should help to make you well versed on that particular series and may help you become a better cherrypicker. Completing 63 sets might even make you an expert - on that particular series. But you probably won't be very well-rounded in your knowledge of coins in general.

Personally I don't collect sets. I am more of a type collector. A nice example of each type is much more appealing to me than a set where every coin looks almost exactly like all the others. For me variety is the spice of life.

not really, once I finish a collection I'll be on the look out to upgrade it slowly... but aside from that... no. lol
In fact, I only need 1 more cent for my 1940-1974 Cent Binder :)

see, i think of myself as a tweener. i am set collecting mercs, yet i am always on the look out for nice examples of of other coins. i pick up cents here and there, peace dollars, morgans, whatever catches my eye really. i wasnt asking for advice for weather or not i should continue or stop after a set is done, it was just more of a general question to see how many people actually love one type of coin that they continue to buy them after their set is completed.

I've completed a few sets, but still pick up coins from those sets that I like. Not really upgrading as much as getting them because I want them. I have about 16 Morgans to go to finish that set, but I still pick up duplicates all the time.

I don't have any complete sets yet. I seem to get going good on one series, and then start another. Running out of room in the safe for all these Dansco albums!

I completed my average circulated Merc set and then started upgrading to au/bu. Got that almost finished (we all know some of the keys are out of reach for some of us) and started upgrading to FSB. I can see how you can end up with multiple sets once you start upgrading. But I do love my winged lady and will pick up dupes if I feel it's a good deal John

    hi,
i have almost completed my Australian penny set with all at UNC except 2 coins i am missing and they are the 1930 penny which i hope someday i will have at UNC condition and the other is 1925 which i cant seem to find and everytime i do they have some ridiculous price which is 2x the book price but i got a EF that fills the spot and a really good copy of the 1930 penny which also does the job

The next collection i want to start is on maybe Morgans (ms 64+) although they are not easy to find in Australia and there not many experts on them its going to be quite hard :D but since i know i got this forum to read and learn about US coins i can start learning a bit more :hail:

I like my 19th century U.S. type coins.

I have actually only completed one set. Business strike 2 Cent pieces. Did get a bit carried away though - I did it 5 times.

I have five complete sets so far out of 18 different sets that I have started working on. After each set is done, I move on to the next set. I dont care to upgrade any of the coins because I like circulated coins, my preference, except for my Franklin half set, which is AU-MS. Once a set of mine is done, its put away and I move on. So far, I've completed Lincoln Cents, Mercury Dimes, Roosevelt Dimes, Washington Quarters and Franklin Halves.

My Franklin half set interested me only as far as it took to complete it. I never really spent time to understand the particularities of the design or differenciating strike quality, etc. My IHC set, however, continues to interest me and I will probably never stop seeking out quality examples and varieties.

Coinnewbie01, if you get some books on Mercury dimes (especially one on varieties), you will almost certainly continue with the series long after bagging the 16D.

I think you should continue collecting mercs unless/until you tire of them regardless of how many sets you have. That said, my collecting habits went in the opposite direction where there isn't much chance that I'll ever complete a set of everything. For the coins I collect, I have many duplicates, triplicates, quadruplicates, etc.. of the same date/mintmark, and this doesn't bother me at all.

Well, like Hobo said, to each his own. To me, after (better word "when") I finish a set, I'll move onto another one, but still probably look at other coins that are the same series as my completed set. Like, for upgrades or such. But to me, I just go along and pick up coins that catch my eye. ;)

To each is own, to sound like a broken record :smile. I go in phases, it seems, between all the different, albiet incomplete sets I have right now. My big kick now is roll searching with my kids and having them fill their books ( and cherrypick a few for myself ).
