Hello All, What about this one: 9,5 grams, 24 mm.....letters look strange.,,and it is not a Sestertius...
I suspect they started with a coin like mine below and got a little carried away smoothing the fields. Where smoothed stops and tooled starts is always a question but I think this one crossed the line.
Try to find another match online to see if it has been tooled a lot (the lion skin looks odd) like Doug says. I suspect Doug is correct, authentic coin that has extensive tooling.
Here is another example of mine for comparison ... Commodus AE As Rome mint 177-192 AD Diameter: 25 mm Weight: 11.55 grams Obverse: Commodus bust right wearing lion’s skin: L.AEL.AVREL.COMM.AVG.P.FEL Reverse: Very interesting reverse with the following legend HERCVL / ROMAN / AVGV ... in three lines, divided by club, all within wreath
I'am the new owner of the coin and i think the coin is an Original coin but it is extensively tooled. In stead of L AEL the legend begins with IMP L. The 'artist' that tooled the coin made a mistake here. Under a magnifying glass the IMP is somewhat odd. Also the legend only ends with FEL in stead of P FEL. This is also wrong and another mistake. The reverse looks OK, no mistakes but also heavily tooled. The color is a very nice green, wonder how they do that.
In despite of the heavy tooling i'am happy with the coin. It is a nice example of how an as of Commodus of this type looked like when it was quite fresh. However when i come across another nice specimen that is not tooled i won't hesitate to replace it. Kees
