I don't own this coin, a denarius of Commodus IOVI DEFENS SALVTIS AVG, but I was wondering if there were any opinions one way or another about its authenticity. I do not have a weight. There is some weird surface stuff going on that I have seen before on denarii of this era - fourree? Laminations? Ancient crud?

I know these are pretty scarce. But only if they're real! ro1974 posted a very pretty one recently: https://www.cointalk.com/threads/commodus-jupiter-denarius-stars.301581/

    Thank you!

Looks authentic to me - perhaps the result of worn dies.

I've gotten a few coins from that dealer, no issues. Many have that worn look and sometimes surface issues.

And the OP coin looks OK.

Commodus denarii of this period are often found with really poor workmanship. I see no reason to think it is fourree or fake.
