Commission recommends flag design for 2010 cent
The Commission of Fine Arts has recommended a design of the U.S. flag for the reverse of the cent starting in 2010 after the Mint vetoed its original choice.

i was originally thinking that might be what they were going to do (eventually) anyways. if so, think the '10's will be worth more as first year in series?

    Agreed.

Or, if ya gotta have a flag, don't have a simple rectangle. Have it unfurled, waving in the breeze or something.

There are two different commissions that examine coinage designs and make recommendations. One selected the shield design and the other has selected the flag design. (The two commissions often disagree) Eventually the Sec of the Treasury will pick the design he likes. Sometimes he listens to the commissions and sometimes he doesn't. He is undr no obligation to follow the recommendations of either commission.

The mint should like that design. Nice an flat with no relief. It should strik up well because there is nothing to strike up, and it is incredably boring. If you have to have a flag, don't strect it out flat like that. It makes it dull, static, and lifeless. Put a wave or two in it to suggest motion or movement. It could be symbolically seen as "the nation on the move, or moving ahead" and it would make for a visually more interesting design.

    You betcha.

Look back at the coolest 19th century designs (including patterns). No way they would have something so lifeless; they usually had a lot more depth and detail.

I'd like to see that.... But eagle with a flag...Maybe use some imagination to it, make it really cool, but keep both the flag, and eagle on the coin..that is something I'd collect, even with a high mintage! :)

I like this better than original wheat stalks. But, it is a little boring to say the least which apparently many of us agree on that being the case. Isn't there one of the proposed designs also with a flag that is not just a flat strecthed out design?

Let me add one thing else to this. I'm not planning on collecting these myself. But, it is not everyday we have an opportunity to come up with a new design (except the quarter), I sure wish the mint would get it right because whatever is chosen is going to be around for a long time unless they quite making these.

Why can't you just have the coat of arms on the obverse and the denomination (with some nice decorations, ofcourse) on the reverse on all coins? I'd love to see that.

I like the flag and shield designs, but some of the other designs remind me of Marvel comics... :kewl:
