Commemorative collectors: Modern $5 gold prices

I've had the 2006 PF Old S.F. mint silver dollar for some time now. I really like how they used the reverse of a Morgan for the back. Like having what a perfect proof would have looked like. So I recently decided to get the $5 gold PF to go with it. It sports an identical reverse as the old Liberty head half eagles that I really like as well, which I thought was
    neat.

So I started looking around ebay. There aren't a whole lot of them on there but the prices seem to be amazingly low and don't make sense.

I don't know what issue price was on these from the mint but it's hard to believe that anybody that's selling right now is making money. Here are my observations:

-Typically, for one in a mint box with the paperwork, people want upwards of 260 to 270 range. (I'm guessing just to break even?)

    - But then you can find slabbed PF69s for 260 range.

-But then there's a guy that has 8, PF70 UC's that he's selling, buy it now for 279.99!

-The Blue book lists these at 260.00 for a PF67, which is supposedly around dealer cost.

    - NGC's pop. report lists 1,828 PF70's graded and their price guide (yes, tends to be high but....) puts one at 400.00!

I picked up a PF70 UC last night for 263.00. (Why not since there obviously doesn't seem to be a premium for them?)

Another PF70 went today for 243!!

The kicker is that, there was only 44,174 minted! Which seems quite low to me, for what should be a relatively popular commemorative within the hobby, since it was for the old mint.

So I'm just saying that this one in particular is really amazing me right now, as to why the demand and prices wouldn't be higher. I mean, I paid 53 dollars over BULLION for a NGC PF70. In comparison with so many other coins, and even factoring in some of the error with the price guides, this one simply doesn't compute with me. I guess nobody's buying?

Does anybody know of any other good deals (or steals) in $5 gold commems right now? I think the prices on these 06's are just way too cheap right now. I think there's a lot of up side to these in the near future (although I'm not selling). Anybody agree? Disagree?

That seems to be a fairly high mintage for a modern commemorative hence the low price. Also, I think 60-70% of these coins grade at 70. The graded numbers could be low but holders could send in many more at any time.

I think the spouses will have some worth once people tire of them and mintages decrease. Many have also been melted for bullion.

It is a high mintage for $5 commem. And many people are worried gold is going to go even lower. So they are selling it while they can so they can get what they can get.

super high mintage for this series. Look at the Salt Lake unc for an underpriced $5 gold commem.

Really? 44k is a high mintage? I guess you learn something every day. Whatever happens, I mainly bought it because I liked the coin.

It was super high relatively compared to other $5 comms. Buy because you like it, not because it has a low mintaage.

I like these coins, but I gotta tell you, it ain't the Morgan reverse. ;)

As for up side in the near future, I wouldn't bet on it from the numismatic side, but I do like the gold content and the coin's value with respect to it going forward.

Try looking at the $5 gold commems from the 1980s. They frequently sell below bullion value. They are very unpopular but pretty nice coins.

Yeah, I like the 1986 Statue of Liberty. With a mintage of almost 10 times over the 'high' mintage of the '06s, there should be people practically giving them away.

I wonder why they're unpopular? You'd think people would like buying them even if just for the gold content.

You know of course that one of these days the demand for these coins in OGP is going to skyrocket.....there's goin' to be more crackouts than originals and I shall have the true rarity.:)
