I have four of these coins and like the fact they're one of the earliest commemoratives. All are about EF to AU50 - the ones with lines in their sails anyway. However, I have one with initials etched in the sail in an elaborate scroll. The initials are 'H W L'. Does anyone have any idea what that would mean?

Probably done by someone giving a gift or making a good luck charm . It was done aftter leaving the mint so it lowers the value , which are quite cheap in AU anyway .

    Welcome!!

It means that some kid with a pocket knife was bored......;):)

There is almost no premium for those coins in circulated condition. They almost always trade around melt.

Becky is right. Circulated they don't carry a big premium to dealers but dealers will pay an "over melt" premium for them.

On the flip side they command a premium to buyers. Uncirculated examples get much larger premiums and slabbed grades from MS64 on up increase a lot in value.

My favorite of the commems actually.

Oh, and welcome to the forum!
