This is the only Republican denarius in my collection. I bought it years ago at a show in Massachusetts. It is also also the only Roman coin I have ever bought at a show in the U.S. It depicts Apollo on the obverse and Jupiter driving a quadriga on reverse. I really liked the detail on the quadriga. By comparison with similar examples on acsearch, I see there ought to be a thunderbolt beneath Apollos's head. This one shows no trace of such, but I suspect it is due to the slight off-center strike? Please show your Apollo's ! C. Gargonius, M. Vergilius, Ogulnius, Denarius, Rome, 86 BC AR Obv: Head of Apollo r., wearing oak-wreath below, (thunderbolt?) Rev: Jupiter in quadriga r., holding reins and thunderbolt. Crawford 350A/2 Sydenham 723
The toning of that piece is lovely, Eduard. I think I see a hint of the thunderbolt right at the edge at about 6 o'clock? Here's my example. ROMAN REPUBLIC AR Denarius. 3.9g, 19.6mm. Rome mint, circa 86 BC. Anonymous issue (Gargilius, Ogulnius, and Vergilius series). Crawford 350A/2; Sydenham 723; RSC 226. O: Laureate head of Apollo right; thunderbolt below. R: Jupiter driving galloping quadriga right, hurling thunderbolt and holding reins. Ex Archer M. Huntington Collection, ANS 1001.1.10556
The toning on the OP coin is beautiful. This was the first Roman republic I ever purchased: C. GARGONIUS, M. VERGILIUS, AND OGULNIUS, ROMAN REPUBLIC AR Denarius OBVERSE: Laureate head of Apollo right, thunderbolt below REVERSE: Jupiter in quadriga right Struck at Rome 86 BC 3.86g, 19mm Cr350/2
Great toning, like it , even without the thunderbolt. Old greek Apollo bronze: *Temple is under restoration , should be ready in 2020
Beautiful toning on your coin. These are all interesting issues. Here is a coin with a similar obverse from around the same time. It has some rough looking thunderbolts beneath the neck, which I can see just a hint of on yours. Mn. Fonteius Obverse: MN FONTEI C•F, laureate head of Apollo (?) right Reverse: Cupid on goat right; above, piles; in exurgue, thyrsus; surrounded by laurel wreath and dots Crawford 353/1c, 20mm, 3.85g, minted at Rome in 85 BC
