    I say no.

Now some of the colorized versions are actually vinyl stickers... not even hand painted.

It seems no one cared, they just got sold on late night cable tv next to the Snuggies... until they started selling Obama Hawaii & Illinois quarters. Then the media started running "trouble shooter" exposes talking about how these things are just cheap trinkets and not collectibles.

As noted it was recently found out that many of those advertised painted coins seen on TV were actually only stickers that started to fall off almost immediately. Many of the actual painted ones sell real well but when people attempt to resell them, they find no one wants them. Mostly for one time, first time, amateur collectors that get sucked up into any of the popularized types of articles. Remember the Beanie Babies? What happened to all those decorated plates? Then too there was the sports cards, Hot Wheel cars with red walls, Knives by Popiel, or whatever his name is, that are all made in China. Now if you watch TV the biggy is send in your old Gold for cash. I really like the one that says they'll give you 25% more. MORE THAN WHAT?
Soon enough all those painted coins will be just laying around with people saying "Nuts, I got swindled again".
If your looking for an investment, purchase Buggy Whips. With gasoline prices what they are, I predict the return of the horse and buggy.

I honestly love them. They look cool, very cool, but I wouldn't own one.

Reason being, they are not easy to resell and dealers / purist like there metal silver eagles pure and free from any altercations..

But who cares? Is it really unpatriotic or truly "Illegal" morally to alter a or "Deface" a coin?

The artist doesn't do it to "deface" it due to lack of patriotism, he does it because he wants his/her design or work on the coin..

What's wrong with that? That's just being creative. It's human :)

Killing me... Like twilight Zone "Beauty is in the Eye", You are right... I think that Yes.. The Carved Coin can be art.. Is Art.. I Love them.. But hate a Colored Quarter.. With Plastic on it.. It is me that puts it in different categories.. One Art and One not.. I need to open my mind a bit.. But I tell you what.. It will be hard to see some of that junk out there as anything more than junk

Hate them. It's stupid but appeals to some segment of the population, or else they wouldn't be doing it. "Make it and they will buy."

I do not hate or love them but would not waste my hard earned money on them. Once a coin has been altered it is nothing but a token of sorts with no real value. The ones that have actually been painted as opposed to being stickered might not even be able to be spent if you were hard pressed to do so. Each to their own tho or as someone once said.."there's a sucker born every day" or " a fool and his money soon part ways." JMO

No room in my collection for ruined coins.

I would never personally buy them... It honstly makes me a little sad to see coins get defaced. The only reason I keep the holed penny is because it is lucky, but carved, colored, drilled, counter-stamped, gold-plated, and pressed coins should really just be avoided all together. I hate them hate them hate them!

Post mint damage. I don't like to see people buying them and then getting face value when they try to sell them. A suckers buy, unless you like the artwork.

I think they are absolutley terrible. I hate it when people are getting ripped off by people buying a coin, putting a sticker on it and selling it for a huge profit as a "collectable"

You said the magic word art..
Many people like the art work on these coins. It takes a lot of skill to do this. Not that i would like one. But every one to his own.

    Double Defaced

Being a coin voyeur, I sometimes wonder.....
Hobo coins can be really improvements!.

Double Defaced by being a hobo, painted deviant.....Can be pulled off.

So I say "Go For it".

And ignore what you don't like and seek what you like.

That should take up your spare time, don't ya think?
