im sure we've all seen the offers for colorized statehood quarters and ASEs... but now ive seen a colorized 2 dollar bill. WHY???? dont get me wrong, you can color your currency with a box of crayolas for all i care and dip your whole coin collection in oil based paint if it makes you happy but is this really part of a coin collectors "must have" list? there's really nothing wrong with it i suppose but who buys these things? i have to admit i kinda like the ASE's but most likely i would never buy one, i think the metal and the work in the die is artsy enough for me. i prefer to let the "coin" speak for itself. my only fear is they'll colorize things that shouldnt be. i guess im a little grumpy cuz i love the 2 dollar bill and seeing one treated that way even if its a new note kinda bugs me.
i think all that colorized stuff is aimed to rip off new collecotrs thinking they are getting such a great deal. then they find out they got ripped off and then they give up collecting. it kinof gives coin collecting a bad name if you really think about it. :desk: and what really hacks me off it that littleton is offering a colorized peace dollar. thats just a waste of a nice silver dollar if you ask me and it ruins the value except for melt and they sell them for alot of money.
ok the peace dollar goes too far. THAT is flat out wrong. im not a silver dollar fan but i do like the peace dollar and i think that's blasphemy to do that. i dont care they do it to statehood quarters and such but they stopped making peace dollars decades ago. leave them alone! and yes citizen kane...and its a wonderful life also comes to mind.
Was that $2 bill colorized on the front or back. Have you seen all those fake bills with odd people on them? Coins doctored with also strange things on them. They all sell you know. No one would make them if they didn't sell. Not sure who or why but they do sell.
I bought a couple of colorized ASEs off of Ebay a few years ago [back when I was still using ebay]. The price was about the same as a regular bullion coin. It was bullion then and now so I don't see the harm. Most of the numismatic value in a coin is derived from a shared perception, not actual value. When something falls outside of the 'rules' it becomes difficult-to-impossible to accept. But what I've come to understand is that virtually everything is collectible by someone somewhere.
https://www.mintproducts.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=1129 its on the back and looks ATROCIOUS. ive seen the bills you're talking about, they have ones for bowling and wrestling and all kinds of stuff. i saw a whole page of them on another site. i didnt see anything wrong with those because its fake money and anyone would see that. but to colorize a peace dollar? NO NO NO NO NO! do not do that. ive not seen it but someone else said they did.
I may be one of the few that loves the colorized ASEs and at the local coin shows, I can usually buy them at or near spot and almost always below the price of the regular ASE. The dealers hate those painted ones and want to get rid of them. They are an ounce of silver and I'll buy them any chance I can at or below spot. On 9/21/07 I won an auction on eBay for (2) 1/10 oz. painted AGE that I think are beautiful. I won them for $70 each + $3 shipping for a total of $143. The spot price of gold closed that day at $731.00. I bought gold below spot and to me, I have 2/10 more gold to add to my stash at a great price. It's hard to keep buying at over $900/oz. so I've tried to look for European coins (love those 10 and 20 Francs coins) or fractional AGEs or Maples. I don't go for painted or colorized in any other coin except the American Eagles and don't SEEK them out but buy them when the price is right. *~*Joey*~*
You're buying them smart though Joey. Good for you I would do the same for bullion. On the other hand when these come out they are just meant to suck people in at over inflated prices. It works unfortunately.
hey im ok with colorized bullion coins. silver, gold, palladium, and platinum...go for it! just leave the regular currency alone. thats all im saying. i admit the ASE's do look nice all painted up and they dont hurt the melt value so there is no harm in them. but someone else mentioned peace dollars, that aint right man! neither is doing it to a 2 dollar bill, even if it is a regular run of the mill plain jane 2 dollar bill. i dont even like it when its done to the nickels or quarters but they are a dime a dozen, again not that big a deal.
God Bless Capitalism. So long as some folks are stupid enough to buy them for anything other than artistic or "because it's shiny" reasonings, people will produce them.
