Colonial Copper?- Farthing When I found this I rubbed it between my fingers and wiped it with a wet cloth to read it. It was unreadable at best and now I hope that I didn't ruin the value but at least I can see the design now ~HOWEVER it was brought to my attention that this COULD be a J.F. Atlee or Buehl. What do you think? I actually found this with my metal detector down south. North Carolina I believe, in the 1980's. All signs point to it being real but I want your opinion. What do you think it is and what do you thik it's worth? I believe it to be a VERY old counterfiet coin. Still of value but the reason I think that its a counterfeit is that all of the coins I have seen similar similar have the lady & scales facing the opposite direction, Iknow some are oriented this way but I have my suspicions. The wear on it is not it's original becuse of a shovel strike (very slight ding on back) and cleaning (shiny high points) to see what it was.
WOW! a very BIG THANK YOU!! I been bewildered by this coin since I found it! I'm still a bit confused about it's history but at least I know what it is now!! A Farthing. cool. =]
It appears as though it is a very important coin. The folks in England running those links say they are rare, and "extremely rare in the US". They are not true Farthings, but a token meant to act as a Farthing in trade, either for coinage shortages or protest according to some guessing among those collectors.
