Well I graduated from high school last Friday and August 23rd will begin Le Moyne College in Syracuse. Now I will NOT be bringing my collection or any coins to campus but what would you recommend in regards to collecting and college? Perhaps invest a couple hundred dollars in a decent safe? Or just leave things as they are?? Thanks for any advise and....
congrats to all of the class of 2012!!!!

Leave the coins where they are...safe at home and get a safe deposit box for the new purchases during college...keeps them out of the dorm room and allows transporting them to home on your breaks. That's the best advise I could give in my opinion and congrats on starting college!

Ya, don't let any of your dorm room buddies know where you keep your coins that you collect while there.. And as already mentioned, take them home when possible.

Even buying a safe if putting it in the corner is not good. They can just pick it up. I once was buying coins and she showed me the safe. First it needs to be one with lots of security. Second it needs to be bolted into the floor so no one can pick it up. Hers was bolted in so you would need to either cut the floor around it or somehow pull it out.

ok, thanks for the responses. I know Syracuse does have some coin shows that I might check out eventually and as for the safe, I'm thinking for a basic, metal safe (say 2ftx2ftx2ft) around how much would this cost me?

It would be better to get a safe deposit box at a local bank.
A small safe could very easily be carried away and living in a dorm makes it likely it would be.

Hey now. I would just like to chime in and say you should be able to trust your roommate(s). You'll be living together and that means shared space. It's more about keeping your valuables safe from the general crowd that may happen to pass by your room. At least that's how it was when I was in school.

    Congrats on graduating!

    I think that's extremely naive.

I just finished my first year at school, and as far as coins went, I just went from circulation and kept them on my desk. What I also did was bring a 40% silver half dollar that I would flip around sometimes to make "important" decisions (Raising Canes or Papa Johns) :). Those little things helped keep it interesting, and got people to ask about coins.

For what it's worth, I would not bring anything too valuable, or use a safe. Most of the time people are trustworthy, but even if someone sees a safe or a lot of coins on your desk as your door is closing they could tell someone who could tell someone who doesn't know you, and has no problem breaking in a taking your stuff. Just my opinion of course. Enjoy college! It's a lot of fun

    Will

I wouldn't go quite that far but a college dorm is filled with people you don't know and it's better to be safe than sorry.

My only actual advice is, focus more on school, not the coin collection. ;)

Oh I know, it was being more sarcastic than anything. But I'm willing to bet there's more theft that occurs within a family living together than outside theft type jobs. I know with my older brother, I couldn't leave anything valuable out or it was gone or spent (if money). ;)

Congratulations, I graduated from Lemoyne in the last century...1998. It was a great school, may I ask what you are going to study? How do you feel about snow? It snows in Syracuse a little bit, especially if you wander too far north of the city.

As for your collection I would think the best thing to do would be to leave it at home, at the very least, until you are very comfortable with your new surroundings and schedule. WRsiegel had great advice about working from circulation, that way you are less likely to lose anything to valuable. You should give roll searching a try if you have not already.

I didn't mean to send you the wrong message. Be smart with your valuables, study hard and enjoy your time there.

I would recommend keeping the coins at home as well, particularly if you're being assigned a roommate your first semester. After that, if you live with a person you can trust, I wouldn't be quite so paranoid.

Even though you'll undoubtedly be on a tight budget for a few years, you will also have access to unparalleled resources. In addition to the books you will have immediate access too in the school's library (any school with a classics department will probably have at least a few books on ancient coins), you can use interlibrary loan and various institutional databases. Jstor is a database, with highly restricted access outside of academia, that has tons of useful scholarly articles. Illiad, if your school has it, is a service that will scan and email short articles to you, from journals that are not otherwise accessible or, if you need a full book, will ship it a copy from another institution to your library, with a base loan period of about two weeks.

Gipper1985-that's awesome!! I really liked the school when I visited etc. and will probably be studying History and Political Science with Pre-Law. I.LOVE.SNOW!! :D:D:D to be honest that was one deciding factor between Le Moyne and another school in Scranton (Marywood)

now as for the roommate, I am fortunate that I am one of 3 students from my high school starting LeMoyne and I will be roommates with a guy who has been a good friend in high school and is in general, a great person. However, just to clarify, I will not be bringing any of my collection with me to college.

Regards to the safety deposit box, I would rather not hand over my collection to a bank (but more importantly, pay a monthly or annual fee, I mean over 4+years it would be worth it to invest in a sturdy safe, correct??)

And yes, I am sure I will be living (maybe literally) in the library so studies first, and if the Mountain Dew has not worn off, check out some coins online ;)

Dang man, you posted EXACTLY what I was going to say. Leave your coins at home, but use this time to hyper accelerate your learning about them. Use your access to books to your best advantage. :)

I agree. Only takes one party with a couple scum bags you dont even know, to be high out of their minds at 2 in the morning. They carry whatever they want off through the crowd and nobody knows whos to blame come morning.

I wouldnt waste money on a cheap safe for there or store anything there. Maybe buy some books and supplies that nobody would want.
