Collection Find: To Be or Not To Be Fake?

Found this in a collection of decent foreign coins I picked up today.

I'm not an ancient collector. So any help on whether this coin is fake or real and a possible attribution would be a great help.

    Thanks in advance,
    Joe

Looks good to me. I have one of these and it's in near as bad condition as this. Also seen many others in like shape. Not sure why.

I'll bite. Why? Not saying you're wrong, just want to know why.

Looks fake to me-- the edges look filed and polished-- nearly perpendicular to the faces-- and the fields look cast.

Bad news. They are both die matches (cast) to a coin in Forvm's Fakes Gallery :(

Going through my catalog to see who I bought it from and when, this coin was no longer in my active log. When I looked deeper, I found I returned this coin for the very reason TIF indicated. But here is the one I meant to post (I think it's OK):

That edge concerns me. If it's not a fake I'd say it's definitely been tooled.

Although it looks like TIF has already confirmed it's a fake.

*rats* => that's too bad, jblonde

=> geesh, I hope it doesn't stop you from trying again?!! (ancients are awesome!!)

... honestly, after a while it really does get a bit easier to "have a hunch" when a coin looks a bit suspect

Good luck on your next ancient (oh, and please don't be afraid to post it "before" you purchase it)

    cheers

    Thx Stevex6,
It was thrown into the lot I purchased for $11.00
Both the shop owner and I figured it was a fake, but he through it in as a gift.
The problem is, "What to do with all these fakes?"
They are like hair clogs on a shower drain. At least with the hair clogs you can accumulate enough after time to stuff a mattress. But what to do with ancient fakes?

Make jewelry for the kids or give to kids just for interest (ensuring they know they are fakes).

=> a sweet ol' fake-collection would actually be pretty cool (hey, you're already on your way)

I agree it is a fake. I suppose many of us have a "black cabinet" with some fakes. I have some given to me by friends who didn't know what to do with them. Very rarely I get a chance to educate someone about fakes by showing him a few genuine fakes!

This is a good example of why it is helpful to be on a list like this. The coin shown in TIF's group with the black background was mine and discussed on this list last year. I'm not saying we all should remember every coin we discuss here but...

I'm getting old Doug, and my memory is not so good. I never had a great memory in the first place and the plaque in my brain is not helping.
