Alloy: A metal or mixture of metals added to the primary metal in the coinage composition, often as a means of facilitating hardness during striking. For example, most U.S. silver and gold coins contain an alloy of 90-percent precious metal and 10-percent copper.

Authentication: The act of determining whether a coin, medal, token, or other related item is a genuine product of the issuing authority. A recognized expert in the field, either an individual or a professional grading service, usually does the authenticating.
