I have declined a bunch of cointalkers to join me as friends on FB. It is not a snub, it is a security issue. I want zero mention of coins on my FB because it is such a loose enviorment....
    thanks for understanding....

I hate you too Jack but TOTALLY agree.;) I spend very little time on FB and it's mainly relatives and I'm looking for other relatives. FB is NOT a place to discuss coins.

LOL - last I heard facebook is something for old people now. :) I don't do any of them, except linked in - and I only know personally 2 of them people that have joined my account. I don't have time for that - too busy surfing here. :)

Facebook finally seems to be on the way out (though slowly). Many people I know who once said "ILOVEITILOVEIT!!!!" are now saying "eh... it's getting a little old." And it is.

I have to disagree with you guys on this one. While security is a concern for me, I've made too many good contacts on facebook to view it as a bad thing. Of course, back when I started it was college students only (you needed a .edu email to sign up), and there was a much more community environment. But you don't have to give out address information or anything! But those application things are damn annoying.

If anyone wants to friend me there, I'm under my real name, which I'm sure has been mentioned around here once or twice. But there's no reason to give it away. ;-)

  11. I've got a few fellow coin collectors on there...not too much. I don't talk about it too often but rarely I will.

Well, me on the other hand... Cointalkers add away!! Nothin on there will help you find me.

Although, if you don't mention what your screen name is I won't accept. I need to know who it is I'm adding.

    Ditto that.

Also, not keen on the various issues of content ownership that the social networking sites keep trying to get rights to, privacy, rights to use you/your content in marketing campaigns, sell surfing habits to marketers, customize your web experience for you based on online habits, what you click, etc. There's already too much of that stuff elsewhere... just don't need someone else telling me where to shop and what to buy so that they can be more profitable.

This story recently was in mainstream media headlines too:
IRS Finding Tax Dodgers via Facebook, MySpace

If an agency is trolling for tax evaders there's no reason anything else you do or talk about wouldn't be used to assess you, say about coins or how much bullion you own, show off, whatever. Just doesn't seem prudent to spread such details about your coins and investments out there like that, even if you're a hundred percent honest person not evading the taxman. IMHO.

Same with me. My son always gets hung up on thoes stupid web sites and it has bitten him more than once. Actually with Face Book it got him into some real serious marital problems. Many people have treid to get me to jump in on that web site. I was amazed at how someone else can enter you personal info there without your consent.
Arizona Jack: I suggest you go to that site and see if you are already entered by someone. It happened to me already.

    Carl,
It isn't that someone has entered you in facebook without your consent - all that happens is when someone joins facebook they type in the names of people they know so they can "connect" with them and be "friends". When that person isn't on facebook it gives them the option to send them a message saying that they should join.
So all that is happening to you is that someone is typing in your email address and sending you an email.

Be real carefull about what you THINK has not been entered into such web sites. Remember that even if you don't enter a lot of personal information, others may do that. And if you use your real name and the State your in, you would be amazed at what is available on the internet. Ever hear of People Search? Unless you have a really odd name, you just type in the name and the State and you get all the possible people with that name. With a possible age or town, you can really narrow it down to who they are. And that is all free. For a few dollars more you can get as much info about a person as you want.
I first saw that on the news where a TV station entered CIA headquarters and got all the info you could imagine. Then they went further and requested the CIA employees, their names and addresses and thier locations. All was given. Of course after that, those things were removed.
I thought this might be fun so I went to People Search. I entered the name of a person I used to know about 30 years ago. I entered this State, figuring he didin't move much. I entered his age and marrital status and got his address, phone number, email address, amount of children and lots more. I called him and we got back together for coffee a few times a Month now.
My point is don't get involved with web sites like Facebook if you have even the slightest security concerns.

i'm on there signed up mostly to find some family members, and instead some really old close friends found me so i can't say it's a bad thing, but i don't spend as much time on there as i used to and didn't discuss my find to any of them

this is more fun and informative to me since i enjoy learning new things and yes i agree it is app. this and that it gets annoying so i block them but in my situation it has been a godsend just like here has been as well and i wont even put my coin picture on there just info most already know.

Not possible on facebook. Sure, I suppose someone could go on my wall and post "YOU LIVE AT 123 FAKE STREET AND YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER IS 13524634" But that doesn't happen, and if it does I delete it.

Most people my age are more concerned with potential employers viewing their facebook profiles than the CIA. Regardless, I have nothing to hide on mine.

None of this scare me, because, at the heart of it, I feel that if anyone wanted so desperately to find me, they would anyway.
