relatively new to numismatics.going to coin show today any advice on coin shows out there? do's and don'ts.:hatch:
I really enjoy the shows. I typically prepare a wish list that also notes how much I am willing to pay. I always keep my eye out for deals though and have also been known to make an impulse buy. Be sure to bring some sort of research/price guide with you. Depending on the size of the show, I also like to look around for awhile before buying. Do not be afraid to negotiate especially if you buy more than one item from a dealer. Also, talk to the dealers and try to get as much knowledge as you can about the coins that interest you. Enjoy the show! TC
Definitely make a wantlist AND include the maximum you are willing to pay for each item. STICK TO THE LIST. If you see something that you left off your list, wait until the next show. Stroll around and get the "lay of the land". Make note of items (dealer and coin) you'll want to come back to for a better look. Every once in a while stand back, take a deep breath, count to 10 and then continue your searching. Don't get over hyped. Talk to people, esp. dealers. Lots of knowledge out there. And come back to this thread annd let us know how things went. Show-and-tell is half the fun.
It 'has' been an interesting topic. As you can imagine, this is rehashed here a few times a month on average. But, to your defense, the search did not bring up many of the old threads I thought I'd find. Many here, including myself have shared their experiences several times in extensive write-ups. Here's one of the more recent for you: http://www.cointalk.com/t91567/ If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask.
Being this would be the first coin show you will be attending, I would go there planning on not spending so much, but rather asking questions and getting to meet people. Then reporting your findings and experiences on cointalk, along with any requests for advice you may have.
I'm also new to it and really dislike shows--not my atmosphere at all. I much prefer shopping and purchasing online. However, that's just my take so don't let that color your perspective too much. I do think they can be informative. Good idea to have a rule in place prior to attendance about what you are looking for and what you will pay for it. With so many options, it's easy to get buyer's fever. Or just earmark a fixed amount, not a lot, and say you won't spend anything over that amount.
