Coins you would never buy raw without authentication?

For me it would definitely be any Trade dollar or key date Morgan and any 1909S VDB penny. So many fakes out there.

Any high value coin I don't have enough knowledge of or enough information on i.e. good photos to authenticate myself.

 

My list of what I'm willing to buy raw is much smaller than what I'm not since I'm quite new to coin collecting and have so much to learn.

 

I'll buy any coin raw from a dealer I trust who offers a personal guarantee of authenticity (though these might get sent in at a later date). That said, key dates, trade dollars, Indian quarter eagles, early Spanish milled coinage, etc...

 

Beware fake slabs too. Always check the cert number. With time you will become more confident.

I will echo this statement as if I was going to pull the trigger on such a coin it would be from a trusted dealer. With an option to return if not what it was represented at time of sale . That would be raw or slabbed coins. It also would be on coins that may have been part of crime. Example if the coin was on a hot sheet having been stolen during a crime.

As previously stated - I deal with particular dealers often for Civil War Tokens (Steve Hayden and Rick Irons to name a few), and I would buy (and have) coins from them sight unseen because I trust their expertise and their business principles. I am fairly well versed in the world of CWT, and always do my own due diligence when shopping in the open market (eBay). That said, for me, there is a dollar threshold where I prefer my items to be either certified or purchased from a trusted or high volume dealer. That threshold varies (every other Friday), but is usually in the $100-150 range. The reality is, most CWT are going to be less than that or I'm buying them from a pro anyways.

When it comes to other coins, I tend to be gun shy around anything I'm not familiar with. Key dates, rare coins, etc all should be certified by a recognized TPG. I'm even okay with one of the Tier 2 TPGs to certify the authenticity of the coin, although I tend to do my own grading.

 

I would worry about most gold coins.

I gave this some thought... basically any 6-figure coin.

 

Trade dollars are a no brainer. Any key date for any coin. And the $2.50 Indian gold, though I doubt I would fork over for any raw gold, sans one dealer I trade with.

 

Jester you deal with war tokens, my grandfather (who died before I was born) had coins he gave to my mom, anyway before she died I got them, one was a 1864 Lincoln Presidential token, he looks like his beard is different and the back says OK, there's also a moon shaped piece that looks stamped out, cant remember where its buried in the safe and its 0530. I have no use, how or where do you get rid of them
