In your opinion, are there any coins that should not have been even issued. What reasons do you have for this statement. This can be any coin in the world any decade. My choice Susan B. Anthony Dollar. I think it is an ugly design that is to easy to mistake for a quarter. It is hard for people to accept as currency.
sacagawea. bad design, too political, oh yeah and no one wants a $1 coin when there is still a $1 bill.
Well you're right about Susan.. she was no beauty. I don't know why a litte "artistic license" wasn't used; she really needs a nose job. And I almost spent one the other day as a quarter... the clerk at the P.O. was honest and handed it back.
I agree they just look so plain, now take the Euro and some of the other new coins around the world artist for sure. I mean if were going to spend all this money with new coins and designs why not put some real work into it please!!! Bob
If the Ike, SBA and Sacagawea were issued as commemoratives, fine. But like other have said, they will never be used while the paper dollar exists.
I would always agree with the Susan B but if one wants to go back further and use the "quarter argument" the 20 Cent Piece should have never been made. It's longevity (or lack thereof) shows this. I for one am glad it was minted.
Prexibux, ugly and unimaginative designs, unpopular politicians. State quarters, there were some good designs, but most stunk. Currently, the Lincoln cent. I love collecting old ones out of circulation, but frankly the coin is worthless and has no spending value now and only exists because of tax. Should be a NCLT coin issued for coin sets annually only. The Kennedy half, well politics aside, it doesn't circulate and should exist as a NCLT coin for sets only.
Ok, here's an off-the-wall opinion... Today, we have coins that didn't exist 45 years ago. True, there were pennies and nickels 45 years ago, but they had the purchasing power of today's dimes and half dollars. There weren't any coins in 1964 that had the purchasing power of today's pennies and nickels. I'm of the opinion that we should have 10 cent, 50 cent, and dollar copper coins the size of dimes, pennies, and nickels. We should have 5 dollar, 10 dollar, and 20 dollar silver coins (or bimetal...copper and silver) the size of nickels, quarters, and halves. Both copper and silver have great anti-viral/anti-bacterial properties that would be great in flu season. Paper money is made of linen...it's like trading in other people's dirty underwear. Paper money should be restricted to 100, 500, and 1000 dollar bills. The US Mint is supposed to make coins for commerce. We should stop making BS coins that no one will ever use. Unfortunately, politics gets in the way and we end up with a bunch of big dollar coins that no one uses and pennies/nickels that no one wants. :crying:
It is interesting that when the US Government began making and selling bullion coins, they used designs that were almost 100 years old.
Any current redesigns I really hate. ESPECIALLY the president dollar reverse why in the world did the US mint try to copy the euro and use $1?!?!?!?! I don't care for a big number to be used to represent the denomination, it's like an uncreative filler piece.
The presidential dollar coins...ugly, look like old gas station tokens. I LIKE the Sac. Too bad it isn't used.
I'm sensing a lot of negitive energy from this thread, such passion and outright disgust for certain US issues. Chill pill people. Do these coins really bother you folks that much? There have been times throughout our coinage history that the more classical and accepted designs have been villified. Take for instance the Morgan Dollar. The reverse eagle was not well accepted. "Scrawny", I think, was the term someone used to describe it. The flying eagle cent was made fun of too. Do we make fun of these issues today?
Well the Brit Crown for Churchill is ghastly. I think the Walker 1/2 dollar, Looks like a Street Walker. And of course the Zimbabwe Trillion Dollar bill. Traci
The worst coin I think that the US MINT made was the Eisenhower dollar, there's something about that coin that turns me off.Don't get me wrong he was a great Pres back in those days way I learn in history but he should not of been put on a coin, I know I'm going to take some heat from people that love that coin, but I think it was one of the worst designs I seen on a coin. :hug:to all people who likes them. :haileace Carl
It's just the way it is. People complain about everything. In 150 years people will love these and not fathom that anyone ever hated them, or even campaigned against them. I will say the Euro series. They gave up (in some instances) hundreds (Thousand? I don't know yet, still learning) of years worth of history to make things slightly easier for the relativly small number of people that regularly travel internationally. Add to that the fact that they have too PC designs and wholly uninspired reverses, and I just don't like them. I have always disliked things that destroyed history and tradition, and especially things that try to prevent people for thinking for themselves...the Euro prevents whole countries from thinking for themselves...
It's funny that ppl are trashing these coins, the Susan B. is a terrible looking coin for certain. Most likely the ugliest in years and decades. With that said, she may be a very desirable coin someday so if you have a really nice one, keep it. Stranger things have happened here in America. Remember the Ford Edsel? Very expensive cars now, still ugly as all get out but they command the big dollars, and are highly collectible by some ppl.
