Ever since I was very young I have always found the era around WWII very interesting. When I began collecting coins, I always wanted to put together a complete set of German coins that spanned the Third Reich (so 1933-1945). I have been looking online to reseach coins from this era but have yet to find a site with a lot of information. Basically, what I want is a site that shows years, mintage location, mintage numbers, ect... Basically, all I know about coins from this era is there were no gold coins (and the 5RM coin is 90% silver while the 2RM is a less). So, does anyone know a site (or a book) that would help be research this topic. Thanks!
The Standard Catalog of World Coins 1901-2000(?) by Krause has mintages and silver content. Most public libraries have this book. It is nearly the same size as a telephone book and is sometimes called the "telephone book". I'm sure there are books specifically about German or Nazi coinages.
I would just find a copy of krause and copy the pages, thats what I did and the world coin gallery is great for looking up and seeing the coin and give the KM # and the relative worth... http://worldcoingallery.com/countries/Germany_all4.html they seldom have all of them there but they usualy have most coins from a certain country this centrury
RichieB, Fortunately,it's relatively easy and quite inexpensive to assemble a complete type set of these.I think I'm only missing the 10 pfennig with the hole in the center and the Martin Luther one.
Mikjo0,the 5 & 10 Pfennig with the hole in the centre was used as occupation coinage by the Wehrmacht. That is a reason why they get big prices.I've never seen one. Other coins you have to watch out for is the 1945-48 Allied Occupation Reichspfennig coins,& the 1944 1 Rpf. without the Swastika & wreath. The latter is extremely rare. The former are very seldom seen. The nickel 50 Rpf. & 1 RM. are very difficult to find.I have seen a few 1 Reichsmark coins & 1 of the 50 Reichspfennig with the Swastika. Aidan.
Thanks Aiden, I thought my 50 pfennig HAD little mini swastikas on it but after taking a closer look, they are just square dots on either side of the date..see pic.I also have no 1 mark coin. Now I'll have to go look for the other issues...
I don't really have any info. But there is always a guy at the big coin show I go to who sells only foreing coins. And he always has a bucket which says "Nazi Coins 3 for a dollar". I've gotten quite a bit of the collection completed just from that, including many that do have little mini swastikas.
I bought most of mine from here: http://www.joelscoins.com/wwii.htm This is a fascinating site as well if you take the time to look at all of the links..some amazing stuff!! go here and start clicking, you won't be sorry. http://www.joelscoins.com/map.htm
Mikjo0.only coins dated after 1936 have the Swastika, except in the case of the silver 5 Reichsmark with the building. There were some issued in 1934 that have 2 Swastikas on the reverse. Aidan.
Hello RichieB16, I'm also very interested about the 3rd. Reich coins, I have some doubles (maybe we can swap)... I would recommend you this site http://www.sammler.com, it has very good info about German coins, incuding of course the 3rd. Reich ones.
Things are good here. We have some numismatic news... hehe. The last (sadly a bad one...), a whole 50.000 Guaranies banknotes box has been robbed. So our banknotes will jump from "B" series to "D".
Hi ! I hope I'm not "intruding" with this message. I noticed your thread message and the request for any websites or books dealing with Third Reich Coins. Being new to the forum, I just thought I'd mention my own interest in the topic. My website www.luckylukeonline.com has a Nazi Coins Research Page where I try to give some detailed background information including pictures of all the coins minted during the period of the Third Reich, mint years and mintmarks (including location). Hopefully you might find it of some value. Please feel free to contact me if you need any further information ie mintage numbers of each mintmark etc. I lived in Germany for approx 3 years and managed to get a couple of good reference sources. Cheers! Luke
