Hello. My grandfather recently passed away. While going through his papers and other belongings, I found an old cigar box that has a bunch of coins in it. I don't know anything about coins and I was wondering if anyone would be able to shed any light on their worth. I don't have any pictures of them but I could take some if it would help. A few of them are United States Half Dollars for years 1871, 1858, 1857, 1853 (this one has arrows on either side of the year), 1844, United States One Dollar peice 1921. I have more but these are some of the older ones. Thanks for any help you can give me. Melanie
Unfortunately coins hold all of the value in their condition. Many factors are involved when determining the value. Some of these factors included wear, handling, cleaning, and contacts marks. The Half dollars will be $10 to hundreds of dollars depending on these factors. The Peace Dollar dated 1921 is a really good one. There were two different dollars issued in 1921. The Peace Dollar will look like this one. $50 to hundreds depending on condition.
Thanks for the information. The crown for the 1921 coin I have says "Liberty" on the crown and there is wheat that comes out of. It's a little blackened around the edges and has a few scratches but it looks like all of the detail is still there. Do you know where I would go to get the coins appraised and possibly sell them? I live in New Jersey. Thank you!! Melanie
