I was at our Credit Union today and used the coin machine they have (They take five cents for every dollar). Anyway there is a little trash can next to it and I was tossing a piece of paper into it and then I noticed a bunch of coins at the bottom of it. First off there was no trash in it and it appeared to be a new liner, just coins. As I don't normally pick in trash cans, out of embarrassment I looked around the corner and made sure nobody was watching; I then grabbed the coins out of there. Most were foreign coins, but there was a dime and a penny as well. The machine ejects the foreign coins so I guess they are just being tossed out. I will check them today for errors after I scrub them and my hands vigorously which I scrubbed my hands already like twenty times LOL
I've observed people doing the same and never understood why. Even if someone has no interest in collecting, it seems an odd destination for the misfits Anyway, I'd have done the same! -L
Phew - I am glad I am not the only "fool" digging through the trash looking for Tombac nickels from Canada, other young head Canadian cents and five centers, oh and Canadian silver even!
Sometimes they leave a rejected coin on the counter of the machine. I too have dumpster dove for loose coins.
I would have done the same thing that's for sure. Especially in a bank trash can. One would think it should be mostly paper and maybe bags from people holding their coins in unlike food or other waste.
The least looked at place to find coins near the machine is under it. Couple of weeks ago I found a '59-D Roosie loafing it out under the green machine.
Hey free money. Would you rather people stare at you weird and be richer or have regret of not having the coins and the random people go on about their lives?
I shamelessly stop and pick up any coin I see on the ground wherever I go. If I saw coins in the trash as you described, I'd have dove right in. Good on you for preserving them! I wonder how many coins wind up in landfills each year.
Ok but I didn't see any errors bummer, but I will take a group picture in a min. Well actually I think one of the Canadian coins has a diechip on her neck. It will be a few min.
Hey I didn't check the dime it looks a bit misaligned LOL. Maybe that minor bit kicked it out, the penny has a non error clip so that's why it did not go through. Pic to follow
The dime isn't really off much, but on the rim near Liberty it is just ever slightly thicker, you feel it more than you can see it. I bet if the person tried it a couple more times it would have went through.
More than likely you can ask the CU for a copy of your surveillance camera photo, as I am sure they had a camera watching the machine
