I dont know of I'm in the right section but Im hoping you can all help. I don't collect coins but I recently purchased a large estate lot of old jewelry and in the buckets of jewelry were 4 uncirculated Malta 1972 gold coins in the 2x2 clear plastic envelopes. The envelopes are stamped on the outside and I doubt ever opened; at least it doesnt look like any fingerprints on coins. The estate was that of a lady who was 91 and worked for US government and traveled extensively for her job. There is a 5 pound. 10 pound, 20 pound and 50. I tried to look them up and found they are rarely seen in US and I found a 20 pound w the bird for sale on Ebay for $495.00. I saw the list price for the 50 was over $1,000.00 dollars. Question is, where is the best place to sell and should I sell as a lot since most likely purchased at the same time?

I just posted this same question under old coins of Malta too but saw last response was in 2012:/

I am looking for help- and please don't hate me for my luck!! I just acquired this set of coins but I dont collect coins so I'm hoping you might be able to tell me where the best place to sell them would be and if I should sell as a set.

I know they were the 1st coins issued by Malta 1972. I read they are rarely seen in the U.S. but I found in a lot of costume jewelry I just purchased from an estate. The estate was that of a 91 yr old woman who worked for U.S. government and traveled extensively for her job. My guess would be she purchased them in Malta when they were issued from the bank, came home, threw them in her jewelry box and forgot about them.

I did have my numismatics license many years ago and I believe these are uncirculated. The pics look a bit scratchy but Im certain its on the envelope and not the coin but I didnt want to remove from envelope without gloves available.

    Michele,

You might want to make a separate post for your questions regarding selling coins.

Currently it is buried in a discussion of the Knights of Malta and the Czar of Russia.

As to your question, I would take them to a coin dealer and sell them, or, as you mentioned, Ebay.

    :)

I would sell them separately because someone just might need 1 or 2 coins for their set. wait for other opinions on selling. I would put them in airtites hard plastic containers. I would not leave them in the plastic you have them in. 1 from fear of having plastic damage to the coins and 2 because the coins might get scratched.
