250 silver coins found in Syria. Man would i love to get my hands on one of those coins! Think of the history that coin may have been a part of. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/03/04/AR2010030401944.html
I cant remeber what it was about but a show on the history channel showed a small hoardof about 90? later roman gold coin (in awsome condition) that hidden in a clay compartment in a mill stone
Two weeks ago and the coins are already as bright as new? From the article: "Some of the coins bear the inscription King Alexander in Greek, while others say Alexander or carry the name of King Philip, most likely referring to his father." Coins of Alexander's father Philip II are of a completely different design and should have received more distinct mention while those of his half brother Philip III are the same design distinguished by legend. It bothers me a bit that a professional in the field would make this slip but it is quite possible that it would creep into an AP write-up. One never knows how much to believe when such stories hit the popular press. Has anyone seen anything on this not copied from this one AP release?
I've got some mixed feelings about this story. If that was me that found a hoard of ancient coins my first inclination would be to remain silent about my find and get out of the country as fast as I could with my loot! On the other hand, it's true that you have to be careful of what you believe in the news over there. Does anyone remember the big deal the Iraqi's made on the news about some elderly farmer who supposedly shot down a heavily armored Apache helicopter with some rusty old bolt action rifle? I guess that was their version of psyops, trying to encourage locals to fight their battles for them. Anyway, if it seems to good to be true...well, you know the rest.
