I always put my coins that are in rolls from banks or the mint in empty medicine vials to protect them. What I want to find out is it better to take the coins from the wrappers and put them in a safe vial? Will the paper wrapper eventually hurt the coins? Do the special Mint wrappers really improve value of the coins? Can’t find any errors if we do not open the wrappers. LOL Thans Rick
well, as long as the coins in the paper coin tubes from the bank are not uncirculated, theres no problem. i use the plastic coin rolls to store my coins. as long as the coins are not uncircualted, they will probaly be safe in paper wrappers.
Thanks So the ones with the fancy Mint wrappers will not lose any value by removing the (unopend mint wraps)
I'd be careful using medicine bottles to store coins in - coins are very susceptible to being damaged by the very air we breathe let alone the various chemicals found in medicines. And there will be traces of those chemicals in the bottles. As for paper wrappers, there's two ways to look at it. 1 - Coins in original mint rolls always sell for more than coins in bank wrappers. I do not believe this is justified, but it is a fact that cannot be ignored. 2 - Roll wrappers made of paper can cause coins to tone. Paper is made with sulphur and sulphur will tone coins, especially if there is any moisture, even in the air. And roll wrappers do not hold coins imobile, if the rolls are moved or handled the coins inside will rub against each other creating marks on the coins. So, there you have the information. If the coins are removed from original mint rolls, they can lose value. If the coins are left in original mint rolls, they can lose value as a result of toning and/or rubbing against each other inside the roll. You make your choice.
Thanks for the information have really helpful to me. I do not use the med vials for real good stuff, just stuff I get from change or state quarters rolls from the bank. I make sure I clean the vials real good. I have some coins in them from like 10 years ago that seems to be just like the day I put them in the vials again Thanks Rick
