I love watching ebay, and I noticed this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=39465&item=3914607924&rd=1 the title states "PCGS type holder". Is there any value to having this "Coin World" holder with a serial number? Is this seller trying to imply that the MS he has assigned, and somewhat liberally IMO, is a certified grade? Ms Liberty has quite a bad case of acne for a MS 62, doesn't she?
(Beavis voice) "Eh, heh - heh, heh, he said PCGS type holder" At least the seller is upfront about the holder in the bid. Seriously, I am contemplating encasing all of my Morgans in these holders, but I will NEVER make a grading company - style label for the case. That is just running towards a brick wall, face first.... (IMO) It actually looks like a 62-63 to me. At least the grade is close...
So what is the significance of: Is it his serial number? Is he pushing the limits with that? Maybe implying significance of something that has none? And that is a MS-63 with all that cheek stuff?
It could be an MS-60 or 61 with the numerous bag marks. It sold for $13.57, so whoever bought it got a decent price, even at MS-61.
I'm guessing it is his serial or identification number, but it could just as easily be random numbers. As far as the 63, check these out... I am going to try and get a few standard grade type coins in holders for this very exercise. Looking and making the call between a 63/64/62 is a tough gig.
The first few coins I got on ebay were PCGS, NGC and NTC slabs in MS-62,63,64,65, just for such an occasion; having examples to use for comparison. I would think spotting the difference in 62,63,64 would be really hard to do looking at pictures on a monitor. I got a PCGS MS-64 in the old green holder that may grade higher a second time around
He may use the serial numbers for his inventory system. Not a bad idea. He was upfront about the holder.
