I was just wondering if there was an easy way to approximate weight by face? I was 'told' $50 face contained 44.1 oz of silver. This doesnt seem right based on my calculations, but I could be very wrong or been using poor information.
$50 face in pre-1965 silver halves, quarters, and dimes would have about 36.17 oz of silver. $50 face in silver dollars would have about 38.67 oz of silver. Charlie
I do it the old hard way and look up the weights in grams in the Redbook (or convert the weight to grams) and multiply by the number of each coin for each denomination. After I get the total weight, I then divide the total by the number of grams per Troy ounce then multiply that total by .900 to get the Silver weight. Yep, it's crude but it comes very close, unless all of the coins are heavily worn culls! Frank
