I bought some "collector safe" coin tubes a while back and am just now starting to transfer my rolls into them. The problem is, there is a good 1/8 of an inch between the top of the last coin and the bottom of the lid which allows the coins to move up and down inside the tube. Is there a type of "pad" or inert coushin that I could add to the top of the tube to prevent movement of the coins? Thanks.
You should be able to pick up a foam insert at your local coin shop. They can scratch, so don't twist the lid anymore than necessary.
A Piece of thin cardboard, like from a shoe box ,cut a little big and pressed in will keep your coins from moving and will not twist with the cap when it is removed.
I usually try to put a poorer example on top and use some balled up plastic to take up the extra room. There are probably better ways to do it but this is fast.
These are UNC + rolls so I do not want anything that will cause toning or attract moisture. They are currently in paper wrappers and I want to put them into the tubes for better protection. Would a small rubber plumbing washer work?
Personally - I wouldn't put anything in there except coins. And there's your answer. Put a couple of circulated coins of whatever denomination the roll is right on top. The additional coins will prevent the others from moving around - and who cares if the top get marked by the lid
The coin tubes that I have seem to be too snug for the paper quarter rolls, particularly the Mint rolls. I have two mint Virginia rolls that are so tight they won't come out. Be careful!! BWJR
BWJR, It sounds like you inserted the coins wrapped in paper rolls into the tube, is this correct, or am I reading your post wrong??
A simple cotton ball inserted in the tube first, and finished on top with a second cotton ball. Inert, soft, does not scratch, and prevents movement. Used for decades in pill bottles of all shapes and sizes, still practical today.
