Hi folks Came across this coin/token ? and am having trouble identiying it. If anyone can help id it i would appreciate it. Sorry about the pictures but it was the best i could manage. Was unsure which forum to post it in if this is the wrong forum feel free to move to correct forum. Thanks
It looks like a British token to me. There were a lot of them produced for trade and for collectors in the early 19th century, so the date seems plausible.
According to one web site i found the company produced cloth for clothing ect. Approx 163,000 were minted or produced.
John Bishop’s Cheltenham (Gloucestershire) penny token dated 1812. Obverse: Beautiful view of St. Mary’s Church through an avenue of trees, with legend on two lines in exergue: “VALUE ONE PENNY.”. Reverse: Legend on seven lines: “A POUND NOTE FOR 240 TOKENS GIVEN BY JOHN BISHOP & CO CHELTENHAM 1812”. Centre-grained edge. John Bishop was probably a tailor with a business in Cheltenham.
