It looks like a British token to me. There were a lot of them produced for trade and for collectors in the early 19th century, so the date seems plausible.

According to one web site i found the company produced cloth for clothing ect. Approx 163,000 were minted or produced.

John Bishop’s Cheltenham (Gloucestershire) penny token dated 1812. Obverse: Beautiful view of St. Mary’s Church through an avenue of trees, with legend on two lines in exergue: “VALUE ONE PENNY.”. Reverse: Legend on seven lines: “A POUND NOTE FOR 240 TOKENS GIVEN BY JOHN BISHOP & CO CHELTENHAM 1812”. Centre-grained edge. John Bishop was probably a tailor with a business in Cheltenham.

    Davis Gloucestershire No: 15, Withers No: 673. Diameter 34mm. (↑↓) F+. £20.00
