I saw Haleiwa's thread titled Coin Chat vs. Coin Forum and thought this is something I want to read...... but I was thinking that he was asking about Coin Talk vs. other coin forums. He actually was wanting to know the diffence between the two forums here on CT and not else where....so I would like to know..... since I have never been on another coin forum....what brings you to Coin Talk? What are things that Coin Talk has the the other forums don't have and what do they have that CT doesn't have? Not that I am looking to leave by any means.... Lord knows I barely have time to surf CT......I am just interested in what is out there and why anyone would go anywhere else. Thanks. Joe
I have surfed a couple of others and belong to coinzip. I find this one more interesting and more active than the others. I found this forum by pure luck - I was searching for vbulletin boards when I caught site of this one. Been here since and learned a lot.
Well I do visit one other. I don't go there as often or post there nearly as often either. I actually found it first though. I prefer this one because I just seem to like the people here better. Nothing wrong with the others just think that the people here are more personable. Also I'm very new to this and want to learn all that I can, and I have so much to learn. I am on the internet alot and lately it's mostly just currency that I've been researching.
I have been to a few other forums besides this one and I just like the layout of the forum and I find this one to be much more active and easier to navigate. After you're a member here for a while you feel like its one big family. Its never that personal in other forums.
This is just one of many coin boards I belong to. I am most active on this one, but the other ones I am active on are in more specialized areas of the hobby
It's not a really fair comparison is it? Each forum has its own unique culture as well as different members. Sure we might sign up in the same forum but depending on how the admins set the guidelines to be and how we interact with other members, it can result to a rather different culture.
I agree with Indian, couldn't o' said it better. I think in a lot of ways it is like family here. I feel that I can mix it up and kid around here on this forum while furthering my numismatic education and nobody takes offence. Some of those other boards are way too serious and stuffy...so much so that one is almost afraid to ask a question. That is not the case on this board. No matter what question I've asked here It has always been answered courteously and respectfully no matter how ridiculous it might have sounded. In short, I was never made to feel inferior for something I didn't know and had to inquire about. And I am always amazed at how quickly a question is answered around here
coin talk...................... i enjoy this board. i belong to a couple of others but this one seems a bit more friendly with near zero "holier than thou" individuals.
I agree, this board has the most character (or maybe thats characters) than many other boards. I do visit a few others that are more specialized, but they're not nearly as fun. Guy~
I mostly lurk at the NGC and PCGS boards. There are some excellent threads there, but I've found CoinTalk to be the most friendly place to participate and so I post here. I think that CoinTalk is also more accepting of newbies and that is good for the hobby (and for me since I feel like a newb with so much to learn). The two boards mentioned have some very serious collectors with some big time bucks. They are not in my league and so, while I learn from their posts, I don't feel that I have much in common with many of their posters. I've also seen some vicious posts that turn me off and make me return here for cleansing .
Actually I was talking about Coin Chat vs. Coin Forums within this block of threads. Simply trying to figure out where to start a thread, in this block or another block. But your question is good too. Another subject but good question. So in answer to yours, I like coin talk best. I feel like Catbert on this one. He said: Hey I collect coins for fun and profit. But have never sold a coin yet. Wouldn't have the first clue why someone searches for a coin then after he finds it, he sells it. I think these people are in it for the $$$. Not me. I just like looking at 'em.
Haleiwa....Thanks, I just clarified my original post. I knew what you were asking, but I was just brain dead last night. Let me clarify something else..... I have been on other sites home pages, but never cruised them or searched them. I need to be comfortable with the home page before I go anywhere further. If I don't like what I see, then off I go to somewhere else. Once I found CT, I never had the urge to go anywhere else. Sounds crazy, heh? It was just over a year ago that I started to look for answers about a question that I had about one of my coins. It took me all over the web, on many different web sites, but I ended up here. I searched the site, found what I was looking for and then like many people that find what they are looking for, I disappeared for about 6 months. Then on a cold wintery day, stuck inside, I decided to pay CT another visit and you guys have been stuck with me since. But I think many of you hit on the reasons why I have stayed, with the most important thing being that I consider you all friends. Over the course of the year, I have gotten to know some of you better than others. There are some of you that not a day goes by that I don't have some personal interaction with. And although we may pick on each other and kid with each other, it is all done with tounge in cheek... well at least most of us do . This group is a very welcoming group that goes out of their way to welcome new members aboard, wish each other a happy birthday and even wish a complete stranger good luck on their big exam! hya: Questions get answered, thoughts get pondered, views get challenged and successes get applauded. Once you find CT and see what is here, why go anywhere else? i used to be a big toime colletor too doesnt mean one has to act like a jerk or a toad You had it coming Toad
I post or lurk on several other coin forums and even a couple of stamp forums. Each has a composition of regulars and these more or less set the pace of the forum and this one is well balanced ( including the unbalanced ). If a forum becomes "possessed" by a bully or a group of bullies, the flavor will change, and the forum begins to rot from within. Newcomers to the "habit" usually don't know that a 1922 circulated Peace $ is usually worth just melt, or that old 1909 SVBD shouldn't have been scrubbed with a brillo pad to make it look nice, and the way the members reply often tells a lot about a forum. Here I've noticed that when a truly sarcastic or possibly hurtful remark occurs, regulars call the person on it. In another forum, this doesn't always happen, the thread instead becomes a "dead zone". This board by far has the largest "range" of personalities from the cklassic TYPE A to the possibly clinical and the moderation by both the moderators AND the members is excellent. I have moderated a professional list and know how worrisome it can be. Cheers, Jim
I've tried many other forums for coins but usually now only use two. Some don't have enough participation, some are overly done with way to many members. Then of course some are just dumb. I still don't use this one to much since they made it so I have to scroll all over the place to read anything. No other forum has that problem.
I have never figured out why someone or a group of somone's would slam or bully another post or thread. If they don't agree with the wording, don't even monitor the thread just move on. Keep the forum positive and welcome all, even the uninformed need information. If a wording mistake is made whether or not its intentional, just give it a rest, public humiliation or belittling someone does not make you a stronger person.
