Well, I have been looking around for a podcast about coins and currency. The only one I have found was the Coin Chat Radio. However, after listening to a couple episodes, I found it to be pretty disappointing. I was wondering if there was any interest on here to have a podcast by forum members. Just answer to poll and post any comments you have here and we will see what the general thought is on the subject.
I am FAR from disapointed with coinchat radio but I would love to hear one from cointalk. But do we really have enough guys that know enough of what they are talking about that people could feel confident trusting what they have to say?
LOL! Not much faith in the membership, eh? I see your point, but I think there are several people that could contribute a lot to it. I think it is a fantastic idea. I'd download it regularly. What kind of schedule would the program be on? I think coinchat is weekly. Maybe we could have a monthly show here to start out and see how it went? It shouldn't be hard to put a good show together per month. I think the show would be cool if they picked out some popular threads from the forums to discuss more in depth. That would save anyone from feeling stressed about putting a unique show together. The forum could vote on the threads they wanted discussed, or they could just be selected. In that case, it would be pretty easy to do a show a week. Or maybe twice a month. Yeah, cool idea! Besides that, I've never gotten coinchat to download to I-tunes for me, so I can't even get their podcasts to the Ipod.
It would be kinda cool and probably a lot of fun too. But look at the reality of it - do you have any idea what the production costs of such a thing would be ? At one point Peter was selling his coin collection just to keep the web site up and running. Now try to figure out where the money would come from to do something like you suggest.
I have no idea what costs are involved. Usually don't advertisers cover the costs? How is coinchat available?
To do a simple podcast, which I have done in the past, with people in different locations is fairly cheap. Each person participating would be required to have a microphone, preferably with a headset to avoid echoes, and the following programs installed on the computer: Skype, audacity, and lame mp3 encoder. The people doing the podcast get online via skype, record their audio via audacity, the encoder works with audacity to turn it into an mp3 then you send it to me for editing. I then host it on www.libsyn.com, not the greatest place in the world, but it only costs $12 to upload 250 mb of files with unlimited downloading. In the end, it would cost a lot if we did this in a studio or something like that, but to do a simple one, it would only cost me $12 a month for the hosting plus time, and the people participating their time to download those free programs, record the show and send it to me, plus whatever they want to spend on a mic if they don't have one (figure $40 for a decent one).
Of course, it might be more expensive to produce, but I would love to see a regular coin webvideo. Hosting it is even less of a problem than a podcast, with YouTube. Coin collecting is a very visual pursuit, so I think video would be even better than a podcast - although of course then your participants would need a camera which is more expensive than a microphone.
I most likely would not be able to help with production, (I'm still in school) but if we can find a practical, organized way to create a podcast, I would be willing to donate what time/money I can afford. Which is not very much.
I was thinking that It wouldn't cost that much... If we get really serious I might be interested in a sponsorship or a donation towards the podcast.
Well, the poll numbers were a little on the mediocre side to commit to doing a full on podcast. However, I think that if a sample/pilot podcast was produced, it would give people a better idea about what the whole thing is about. So... I am looking for 2-3 people who would be willing to spend 1-2 hours one evening in the next couple of weeks to record. You need to have a microphone, preferably a headset, and be able to install the programs listed above. Although I think I will only get a couple of people, PM if you are interested and say why you want to be on the podcast/what kind of experience you have, and what days you are available to record. In addition, anybody else can comment what kind of items/issues you would like us to discuss on the podcast. Right now the only thing that I think I really what to keep is a "Whatch' ya been collecting" segment where the people on the podcast can tell about any recent purchases or new interests.
wiggam, I think your talk of podcasts, etc. has left many Cointalkers scratching their heads - and that includes me. If, when you are done "producing" the session, I can download it as an MP3 file - I think everyone would be behind it and for it. However, I suspect it's more complicated than that. And if it isn't and it is really so simple - GO FOR IT! I'm sure you'll find more than one CoinTalker who is willing to share experiences/knowledge.
I think youtube would be the way to go. Only the host has to be present with the other participants calling in. I think it would be a mistake to try to do this on a regular schedule. It might work better to just do it when convenient. Forcing shows into a schedule might lower production quality.
To be honest, I didn't know what a Podcast was. I looked it up on Wikipedia. I still don't know entirely what it is all about. Very best regards, collect89
You can think of a podcast as a sort of radio show. The only difference is that you can hear it anytime by either downloading it or listening to it online. In the end, you will be able to listen (with any luck) a few coin talkers banter about a variety of coin topics which will hopefully inform and entertain. Hope this explanation made it a little clearer.
Well, I didn't hear from anyone about joining the podcast... so here is a trial episode to hopefully give people an idea about what I am talking about. http://sandbox.libsyn.com/index.php?post_id=507369 You can either click the gray symbol next to the title and it should open in your browser or right click and save as to download the mp3 to your computer. It is pretty short, no real numismatic content, just an explanation of what a podcast might be like so have a listen. Let me know what you think or if you would be willing to help host it!
Hey man, great job on the podcast. I think this will surprise several people who had doubts you were serious about this. Great job and I look forward to hearing more in the future. Unfortunately I'm not sure how much of a help I could be, but you can sign me up if you ever want to discuss Canadian copper or large Canadian silver.
