I was wondering if anybody has a link to sites that talk about what years were either years for good strikes or bad and just in reference to the modern USA coin sets. The reason I ask this is some of the CT members reference this when looking at and grading posted coin pictures. Maybe there isn't such a link and it's just accumulated knowledge, but I thought it would be nice to put in my coin book binder of useful information.
I read in Coin WOrld magazine that for Walking Liberty halves the 1933-S is the best strike year, but difficult to find in super high grades, thus the premiums you'll see.
Care to define modern, just for the sake of curiosity ? I know of a few sites that provide info on strike quality for a particular series like say Morgans or Franklin halves. And there are only a few sites like that. But I am not aware of any site that does it for what I would call modern coins. To me modern is post '64. The kind of information you are wanting is usually only found in books about a specific series. But I don't even know of any books on modern coins. There is a member of this forum who can give you the information you want on modern coins, and probably do it off the top of his head, and be right. That's cladking. He knows more about modern coins than any other individual that I can think of.
I was asking for the main sets like Lincoln's, Jefferson's, Roosevelt's, Washington and Morgan's. Those are the ones I have been working on. Probably used the wrong term (Moderns).
I'm sure there's something out the, but "accumulated knowledge" puts it best. I agree, cladking has that.
I would agree with Doug. Absent "accumulated knowledge", this is what the good books on the series is SO useful for. A good series book will go over every date, details of strike, known issues, etc etc. This is why collectors WITH the better references always say those references pay for themselves. I say they pay for themselves both by this knowledge that can lead to better purchases, as well as making the series more interesting, thereby increasing collecting pleasure.
Don't know of any for the others, but this one will works for Morgans. Home page of the site - http://www.coingrading.com/ page that deals specifically with strike - http://www.coingrading.com/strike1.html edit - you might want to copy that info and paste it into a document that you create on your own computer and save it. I say that because that web site is really old, and eventually at some point all of them go down and are no longer accessible.
