So which side of the fence do you fall upon my friends? Are you an absolute maniac about getting the most perfect specimen for your collection? Do you feel that you've got to have the best of the best? Nothing wrong with that. I can understand the motive. Perfect and enduring. But lets explore the slob side of things. Slobs can't always afford the best of the best. They're happy in obtaining a coin that will fit into a hole (collection wise) for an affordable price. They're happy with completing a series in less than pristine condition and they don't worry about 'bragging rights'. They're collectors that have a love for what they are doing and they ain't perfect. That, in no way, means that the guy who wants to complete a high grade set is lacking in his endeavor. Quite the contrary. He is one who has an eye for quality. He's a discerning sort, who only accepts the highest quality. So what ya be friends? Snob or slob? I'm a slob..........
I'm a slob lol I buy the best I can afford but I also buy what interests me I'm less concerned with ms65 vs ms66 grades I like coins that show their age
A slob,I like to collect coins that have been around the block a time or two and gots lot of history behind them
I am definitely in the slob category. While I appreciate spectacularly well preserved coins, little bits of metal is not what I collect. I collect bits of history, tangible artifacts of the human condition. As such, I prefer my coins to have been held, used, and been a part of many peoples lives in the era in which they were made. A perfect specimen probably was buried almost as soon as it was minted, and as such just does not have the human connection to it in my eyes. Then again, maybe its just because I am cheap.
I guess I'm a snob. if i can't afford a nice example of a coin i won't get a crappy one. I don't go for ms65s in older coins but if I like a coin series i want a nice one.I would rather have less coins of better quality
I desire coins 'with a story' more than coins 'with high value'. Serendipity has led me to where I now have coins with both. But my heart will always lie with the coins 'with a story'. I have -- and will continue to -- seek these out first and foremost, even at the expense of passing up the coins with 'high value'. So my answer is-- 'Apparent snob, actual slob'. -thecointrader
There might be hope for me yet. I sold this Barber Dime today on E-Bay for $5 and actually got a little sentimental while packaging it up. I called it the cut throat dime. In case you were wondering, I won it in a poker game. We were playing and betting with junk silver. It was actually a very fun game.
I'm for sure a slob. I significant percentage of my collection has been pulled from circulation. If I were a single man with no family responsibilities, I'd probably be more of a snob. I would love to be able to build a set uncirculated Mercury dimes (quickly), but alas, I have to do it slowly- so slow I haven't even started. I do have a lot of EF/AU ones from when I was a kid though.
