Hi, I am a new member from NYC in this Forum Talk. And I have been collecting coins for a while. I recently became interested in preserving them for future grand-babies. I have been searching for possible ways to store them. And decided to use the Air-Tite holders. There are so many to choose from and I'm having trouble deciding on the sizes I need. I found a printable guide in JP's Corner site but it is not exactly what I'm looking for. Does anyone know where I can find a suitable coin measurer? Either in my area or on a site? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanx!
measuring devices Welcome to the forum Here is a link for measuring tools http://www.brent-krueger.com/caliper.html Hope you find this useful I am sure you will get other replies as well I would be interested in feedback from the forum on the types of devices on this page- If any of you are using them.
I love airtites myself. I am also a former New Yorker, Brooklyn raised and born with my adulthood being spent in various Manhattan neighborhoods. Give me a pm message on the type of coins you collect and I will e-mail you back their sizes and what airtites they need. I am a small time collecter of gold coins but like I said before, I love my airtites and perhaps I could give you some good leads.
Hi fellow, and welcome to the forum. I use a set of calipers very similar to the middle one shown at the Brent-Kreuger site, which I picked up in the tool department of my local Sears. Pricewise it is in the same ballpark, but it has one advantage over the one pictured because it is designed with two scales - one like that shown, which measures the outside diameter of coins or other objects, and the other which can be used to measure an inside diameter, such as the hole in an Airtite.
The redbook gives the MM size of most if not all of the coins that have been in circulation in the US it does not however give the sizes of the commemerative pieces. for those a caliper of any kind that uses MM will do .
Below is an advertisment with the provided website. There are many ways to find the perfect airtite container that you need. Most on line stores of airtites will have the coins with their sizes listed next to the airtite that they would fit. I am just throwing one up there. No need for the measuring tools unless you want to check to see if the coin you are buying is the real deal. If so, then you would need a pocket scale as well which can be found in Office Max etc. "With Air-Tite Holders, every coin minted in the United States and virtually all coins, commemorative coin, and medallions minted around the world can be housed in one of these four holder sizes. Air-Tite Holders offer protection, display and storage options for the coin collectors of the world". http://www.collectorsoutpost.com/category/_airtites
Csi Since you are measuring coins you may want to examine them a little better. In our lab we use magnifiers that look like these http://www.ist-regula.com/Magnifiers.htm these are a little better than what the average collector has you can also see some other good magnifiers if you do a search for fingerprint or latent magnifiers. Have any of you used any of these magnifiers???
Yes, I have one that looks very similar to the one at the top, and one that is very similar to the one at the bottom. Not an exact match, but made on the same principal.
To those who answered my to my question, Thank you! I looked into all suggestions and found that Littleton.com has what I was looking for. For those who might be interested as well check out on web site and search for item #X920-The Coin Holder Helper. Again Thankx!
