Went to my first coin show today. Wow, that was an interesting experience! Met some really nice dealers, and I look forward to going back again. I will have scans later, but here is a report of what I bought, along with listed grades and approximate prices paid (most dealers discounted the listed price). 1852 Large Cent (F) - $18 1870 Shield Nickel (G) - $12 1914-D Barber Dime (VG) - $2 1914-D Barber Quarter (F) - $12 1923 Standing Liberty Quarter (AU) - $62 1924 Peace Dollar (AU) - $12 Coupled with the 1900 Liberty Head Nickel I picked up the other day, my first type set (nickels) is now complete! I decided to splurge on the SLQ, because I really did not like the look of the lower circulated grades. A well-worn SLQ is just unappealing to me.
Congrats on the type set - what's next: date sets for nickels (it all goes downhill from here)! Nice haul! I am itching so bad for the Raleigh show in two weeks I don't know what to do....
Nothing better than a good coin show experience! So, you have both types of Shield nickels (with and wihout rays) and both types of Liberty nickels (with and without cents), and both types of Buffalo nickels (on mound and no mound) and all 4 types of Jefferson nickels (standard issue, war time alloy and those 2 new ones)? And one of each proofs?Congratulations! Actually, a type set is what YOU decide it is. The large cent type set is a little bit more involved.
Ahhh, forget about that one ;-) That show is also held on the first Sunday of each month right? How large is the show?
Yes, first Sunday. I would say that at any one time there were a few hundred people there. Hard to say how many dealers - maybe 75 or so???
I had heard it was a good show and have one customer who always makes a point of hitting the NJ show and then driving about 3 hours North to hit our show in Albany! As a matter of fact, he had even discussed with me the idea of starting another show in the NJ area.
